So as I was driving home tonight, I had the radio on 97.1. The station is a local talk FM station here in the LA area and tonight's subject was about a 19 year old woman who is facing criminal charges because she had sex and got pregnant by a 15 year old boy.
Here's said article:

The radio hosts were arguing that the boy was manipulated and taken advantage of by this woman. The boy's parents claim that he's stressed and having nightmares. (No shit! You're gonna be a dad). The judge has ruled that the boy must pay $50 in child support (which I totally agree with). The hosts were discussing the double standard about how if it was a man, he'd be tried for rape, done and done...which is probably true. Nevermind that there are always two sides to every story.
I was having an issue with this, though and decided to call the radio station. I decided I was going to cover a few key points, and I did.
1. When I was 15, all I thought about was sex. I spent countless hours day dreaming about how I would have liked to have violated one or two of the co-eds at my high school. I knew exactly how it worked, and what I wanted to do with it. Kids nowadays are MUCH more educated when it comes to sex. Most teens at 15 have probably engaged in sexual activities. With the internet, MTV, and some of the songs most radio stations play today, sex is in the forefront. People claiming this 15 year old teen was 'taken advantage of is bullshit.
2. The other thing that really bugged me is the double standard, but not so much with the male/female scenario...more like the celebrity/normal person situation. Perfect example. Jamie Lynn Spears, younger sister of Britney, got pregnant at 16 with her boyfriend who was 18 at the time. Was he charged? Nope. Instead, they made a few million dollars selling baby pictures to some gossip rag. Another example...Hilary Duff was 17 when she started 'dating' Joel Madden from the band Good Charlotte, who was 26 at the time. She's admitted they were dating while she was still 16, and I'm pretty sure no guy at 26 who's dating Hilary Duff is gonna stick around if she's not putting out. Was there ever an uproar? Nope.
Here's what I think. I think the times have changed. I think the standards need to be changed, too. Am I condoning or endorsing sex with minors? Definitely not. But I think people need to open their eyes and realize a teen at the age of 15-17 isn't so innocent...and is nothing like the 15-17 year old teenagers from my generation and before.
