Project 1: The Red Star Murders
(i.e. the Death Packages)
WHAT ARE THE RED STAR MURDERS?
A Death Package is a fictionally staged letter to the authorities from a serial killer, advertising a murder and taking responsibility for it by sending evidence.
THE KILLERS PROFILE
The Red Star Strangler murders his victims by strangling them garrote-style with a red plastic string. Once hes killed them, he strips the victim nude and arranges their body in the shape of a starfish. Leaving the red string on their neck, he then sprinkles them with red sparkly stars, and places five star stickers on their corpse in the following areas: the palms of their hands, soles of their feet and one on their stomach. He then documents the crime scene himself by photographing it with the victims own camera. The Red Star Killer sends a Death Package to the authorities including: a lock of hair from the victim, photos of the scene and a taunting letter. He eludes capture by using a substance known as Time Emulsion to travel through time and space, hiding in different time zones after each murder. Thus his victims are from all different time zones.
PRESENTATION
Each of the eight Death Packages sent to the authorities would be displayed on the floor on a red rug. There might be other visual elements that are framed and displayed isolated from the main Death Package, such as a framed letter or photo from the killer. These would be presented in an acrylic case or frame in the same manner as a framed celebrity object. An audio tape of the victims last statements will be broadcast in the room.
ELEMENTS
1 20 Photos taken at the crime scene with the stars and the Red String in the photos
2 The Red String used for the murder
3 Letter from the killer describing the scene, why he did it, and taunting the authorities. Some of these letters may be written in cipher code or may have drawings or collages as part of the letter.
4 A lock of hair from the victim to prove that the killer was at the crime scene
5 Stickers of red stars
6 Audio tapes/CDs of the victim making their last statements/pleas for survival
7 Poster of all the victims
8 Poster of the crime scene
LOGISTICS
The model would have to stage and photograph their own death scene according to instructions provided by me. Serial killers often set up their grisly crime scenes with props and theatrical arrangement, arranging the body or elements in the room in certain set patterns, as a ritual that is part of their killing process; the Red Star Strangler is no exception. In this case, the killer arranges his victims in a nude starfish pose, places red star stickers on them, and sprinkles them with red star glitter. In this respect, nudity will be required, as the body will be photographed in the above mentioned starfish pose from multiple angles. In addition, the model may be asked to tape record a last statement, or may have their last moments documented on tape as they beg for mercy. One aspect of the project is that since the killer can travel through time, I would want some of the models to depict a scene that might be from a different era of the 20th century, ie the 1920s or 1940s. I will work with each of the models to invent the exact circumstances behind their own demise. Once I have the pictures to use as source material, I will work with the model to compose a letter from the Red Star Strangler, which would then be prepared as a package for the authorities.
