I just realized how completely fuxor this world we live in is
Last week, the old guy who lives downstairs, had mentioned to me he was to buy a new treadmill, and wanted my opinion on what ones are better. I really have no idea on that, so I suggested he maybe have someone in his family take him to the store and try them out. His daughter came and picked him up on saturday, they went to the store, purchased a treadmill and that was that...or so I thought.
This morning, about 45 minutes before I was to be leaving for work, he must have heard me making noise outside as I was bringing down the garbage can. He had asked me to help him with something, so I went inside to see what he wanted. He wanted me to take the pieces out of the box for the treadmill, so that he can put it together. I figured no harm in doing that right?
I came home, brought up the garbage can 9 hours later, and I figured I would see how he made out in putting together the treadmill.
Not to my surprise, exaclty how I left it, is how it was laying on the floor. He said "Oh , since you didnt have time to really help me this morning, can you put it together now?"
------------WTF!!!!------------
I would normally have no problem in helping someone, but this is different. This guy is 80 years old, and if I had built it, and he would have become hurt from it, guess what? I would be blamed. I know that is wrong to think that way, but I think that is the best way to deal with this. He doesnt trust his son , who has to be atleast 50 years old to build it, and I guess his only choice is for me to build it. I told him I wont becuase of a liability issue. I suggested he call Sear's to have them send out someone to put it together, which most likely would cost him X amount of money. He then suggested, he would pay me to build it. I told him, that even makes it worse, I am then even more liable since money changed hands. He even then wanted me to call Sears for him to schedule someone to build it? I said no.
Now I think how messed up this is, that I wont help him, but in this crappy world people sue for stuff like that in getting hurt especially with home excercise equipment malfunctions, and I dont need to be caught up with that.
Would you have done the same in my shoes?
