It’s cloudy, rainy, and gloomy outside. The birds are singing and the spring flowers fill the air with wonderful fragrances. It’s a bittersweet day for me. I work for a major university here, as a cook in one of the largest dining halls in the United States. This is not your normal dining hall or all you can eat buffet/cafeteria. It’s set up in venues serving thing from sushi to stir fry to dish from all over the world. It’s not the dream job I’m locking for, but it has the the greatest kitchen I’ve had the pleasure of working in, with tools and equipment I can’t find anywhere else. I also get to work and train with Chefs from all over the world. I’ve worked the same made to order pasta bar venue for four years as a full time temp, with two of the best partners someone could ask for. Today is my last day working this venue and working as a temp. Hard work and a positive attitude was earned me a promotion. After today I start a mini and well deserved vacation and on Sunday I become a official member of the university’s full time staff and start a new venue. The hours are better, the training is better, the venue is bigger, I now receive full benefits, and seniority. It’s a step in the right direction and I could feel happier about that and yet, sadly I leave my home of four years, where I really did do great things, met great people, and started my adventure towards being my own Chef. I can’t wait for the adventures ahead and to see my growth as a cook continue. Much love
