The Dakota Fanning Weekend
So Dakota had two openings this weekend and I saw them both. She voiced the main character in Coraline and was one of the two leads in Push.
Coraline was in 3-D. This time I sat in the "pit" of the stadium and had my hoodie up blocking out all peripherals. The 3D came across much better than in Bloody Valentine where I sat in the back. I also discovered that my trick with the glasses backwards or upside down was not true. The curvature of the lenses just made it difficult to get the 3D effect when they were on incorrectly.
Coraline was easily the better of the 2 movies but I honestly liked Push enough that I think it would make an excellent background movie. I saw a matinee for both but Coraline was packed with kids. I even had 2 who sat directly behind me and talked all through the trailers and the end credits but were enthralled with while the movie was on. I'm still not sure why they made the slight changes they did to the original story but overall, very true to the book. Push was pretty and if you treat it like an Hong Kong movie (don't worry too much about the plot and enjoy the fighting) it's passable. The plot really makes no sense though. Particularly the letters thing.
10 favorite films of 2008. A friend sent out a list of his so I made one too.
10 Quantum of Solace
9 Forbidden Kingdom: Just to see Jet Li and Jackie Chan fight (and old-school style fight) was amazing.
8 Vicky Christy Barcelona: Any movie that has Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson kissing makes it onto the list. It was actually a good movie too.
7 Tropic Thunder
6 Iron Man
5 Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
4 Hellboy II-The Golden Army: It really is live action Studio Ghibli.
3 The Dark Knight
2 Let the Right One In: I think Eli is SO much more sinister than you can imagine. Even at the movie's end. Classic, immortal, plotting vamp. See it and we'll talkl. NUMBER 2!
1 Wall-E: The only movie I saw twice this year. Amazing. The ONLY things Wall-E and Eve said were "Wall-E", "Eve", "directive", and "no" and you still fell in love with them.
I didn't see a lot of new stuff last year. Burn After Reading, Wanted, Hulk, Indy, Ip Man, Chocolate (Thai Martial Arts film) and Narnia were the only others. I'm not counting direct to vids like New Frontier or Bender's Game.
