3 days out....
All my fellow teachers are all excited for Xmas break (can someone suggest a good atheist replacement for this please, I love the spirit of the holiday; family, togetherness, charity, etc; but I don't need a big g god thank you very much). I finally got the ex to finalize the plans for her brief visit from the kids, you'd think I asked her to give up a kidney. So now all I have to worry about, aside from them actually spending time with their mom, is sending my students home to their homes for the holiday. Sure home for some is okay, but for a great portion of my students it means a place that is unsafe, with people that treat them like they walked in off the street, abusive parents, no structure. I find it harder and harder each year to get to excited for Christmas, I'm sure most if it comes from not having my kids with me, but as that becomes more and more routine my thoughts turn to those kids who don't have what a good family, for even a small part of the break, and seem to come back after there week or two off, more beaten down and sadder then they were when I saw them last.
