I can't seem to be attracted to an attainable woman. I met a girl this weekend, J. Our department chairman brought her in to do a movement workshop (Suzuki, Bogart, etc.) and had a get together at his house the night before. I talked to her for a while and she's smart, talented, successful, ambitious, beautiful, etc. etc. etc. But she lives in Manhattan. And I live in Cleveland. And I'm a lazy, apathetic, unmotivated sixth year junior. The women at work are all have boyfriends or are married (one to one of my professors). If I had taken command of my life years ago, I might not be at Cleveland State now. I might be at Yale or Purdue or CalArts. With tons of smart, talented, ambitious women. So it's all my fault.
I've really been into Plastikman's Artifakts [BC] lately.
And I've decided A Doll's House is a really good play.
I'm directing a short play this week called "Wish Fulfillment" by David Simpatico. It's basically thirteen variations on a young man telling his father he's gay; it's all the things flashing thru a young man's mind as he prepares to come out. Next week is "Twenty Dollar Drinks" and selections from Talking With. After that it's "A Bone Close to My Brain" and "The Grand Design". At least I'm making myself do something proactive.
I'm disappointed with Laramie Project. I think I'm just apathetic towards that play.
I'm also in the midst of organizing my All Time Favorite Songs playlist. I went thru my whole collection and wound up with 443 songs. I'll probably add some more, take some out. Now I'm ranking them. The way it works is that whenever a song I haven't ranked comes on and I'm paying attention, I stick it in the hierarchy. What I have so far:
1. Violent Femmes - Blister in the Sun
2. They Might Be Giants - First Kiss
3. They Might Be Giants - New York City (cover of Cub) (what can I say? I love upbeat pop songs)
4. Tom Waits - The Piano Has Been Drinking (Not Me)
5. Gil Mantera's Party Dream - Blats from the Pabzt
6. Neko Case - Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis (cover of Tom Waits)
7. At the Drive-In - Invalid Litter Dept.
8. Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody
8.5.Wyclef Jean feat. John Forte and Pras - We Trying to Stay Alive (it came on after I'd gotten past 8)
9. Afrikaa Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force - Planet Rock
10. Joe Jackson - Real Men
11. The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil
12. Marcy Playground - Sex & Candy
13. The Fugees - Killing Me Softly
14. The Box Tops - The Letter
15. David Byrne - Don't Fence Me In
16. The Fleetwoods - Come Softly

I can recall being in a similar place a while ago. I'm sure eventually you'll find some motivation somewhere. Maybe a change of location could do you good like it did for me.
