The Matrix is dumb. Like this speech, by Agent Smith.

I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species. I realized that you are not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment. But you humans do not. You move to an area and multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed. The only way you can survive is to spread to another area.

There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is?

A virus.

Human beings are diseasea cancer of this planet, a plague. And we are the cure.

First of all, humans don't necessarily "move to an area and multiply... until every natural resource is consumed." There are many strains of humanity that live in "harmony with nature." Furthermore, we have hardly consumed every natural resource in any of the places we live. We may be creating a situation where we cannot continue to live, but that isn't the same. For example, cockroaches and rats and seagulls live off the very wastes we generate. Second of all, the implication that viruses are somehow bad or evil is a pretty human thought coming from a computer program. Why should a machien care about the flu? Also, equating viruses and cancer is obviously absurd. While some sorts of cancer can have a viral source, the vast majority do not. Furthermore, there is an obvious metaphorical difference between a virus and cancer: a virus is an external force, while cancer is death from within, the body being unable to regulate itself.

Damn you. Why do you have to ruin a good flick by applying logic to it? smile

And along those lines: Why would you ruin a perfectly good vulva by pouring beer on it? Yuck, beer. That's champagne. I'm stupid.

True, but they are the exception, not the rule.

Furthermore, we have hardly consumed every natural resource in any of the places we live. We may be creating a situation where we cannot continue to live, but that isn't the same. For example, cockroaches and rats and seagulls live off the very wastes we generate.

And those account for maybe 2% of the wild population. Most of the other animals suffer because of our waste and destruction. Not quite as badly as Smith would suggest, but still suffer.

...the implication that viruses are somehow bad or evil is a pretty human thought coming from a computer program.

A computer program designed to look like a human, move like a human (albeit much faster), think like a human, talk like a human, etc. It's to be expected. And he didn't say we are "evil"; he said that we are bad for the planet.

Why should a machien care about the flu?

If I remember correctly, there was a huge war between humans and machines. Smith doesn't care about the flu; he cares about a race of inferior (as he sees them) beings who would like to exterminate his kind. Not to mention the fact that his very reason for existence is to kill humans, which gives him a tendency to come up with reasons to hate us.

They share the quality which Smith observed: that of spreading uncontrolled, consuming resources and laying waste to their environment. It's more of an analogy than a direct comparison, anyway.

Besides, Smith was kinda going insane. He's entitled to not-quite-accurate rantings about how much he hates humans.

If you want to talk about dumb speeches from Matrix characters, though, let's talk about the Merovingian. God damn, I wanted so badly for him to get blown up or something.
