So, I'm in a local community theater production of Cinderella (Rogers & Hammerstein, not Disney) and I think this show may be cursed. We open this Thursday and...
Only three people have costumes: Cinderella, one of the step-sisters, and the Steward. I'm playing the King and I've been asked at the last moment to supply my own outfits, all of which are obviously modern cut. We have five costumers, but no costume designer.
Our Director's father had a heart attack on Thursday night, and the director had to fly down to Texas (or Arizona) to make sure he's ok. He left the production in the hands of the Music Director, but the Assistant Director (who had done nothing except look for costumes) has apparently decided this is her time to step up and start bossing everyone around.
Our lighting designer slipped on the ice last week and had to miss tech. Now, she's in the hospital for some sort of blood condition, with no designated backup for running lights.
Last week we had three ensemble members out of town (a week before opening).
In my own case, in addition to having to provide and/or buy my own costumes, I've had a nasty cold for the last week, and I had my own fall on the ice on Wednesday and pulled out my leg (nothing torn, broken, or sprained, thank the theater gods).
The cast is, shall we say, somewhat concerned and everyone is talking. Those of us with more experience are trying to remain upbeat (which is why I'm posting this here, rather than on Facebook). The last few weeks have definitely been a learning experience for when I direct a show, which may happen within the next year.
