I Watched 31 Horrors in October!
On October 1st I made a decision to watch 31 horror movies in October. I knew wouldn't be able to watch one everyday, but I would be able to watch a couple in a day sometimes.
At some points I didn't think I would actually do it, but as it turns out. I was able to finish the 31st movie just before October 31st ended.
This is my review of the month!
Movie #1: Silent Hill
I'm a big fan of the first 2 Silent Hill games. The others can kiss my ass. I had never seen this movie, but I was hoping that I would feel the first Silent Hill game while I watched it. At some points I did. The movie was ACTUALLY good. Compared to most video game movies that are downright scars on cinematic history.
I give this movie a 6/10 for beating the odds and being highly watchable. Sorry ------Rielle I know this is one of your favorites. Don't hate me!
Movie #2: Evil Dead
When H1N1 was going around, I got sick for a day, and my girlfriend Sam forced me to go to the doctor. When I got there, the doctor didn't ask me anything. He stood across the room from me with his hand over his mouth, fear all up in his eyes. He said stay home for a week, heres a note for work. Go to bed. Of course at this time, I worked for HMV and I had paid sick days. So I didnt argue. I swear to god, in that week off, I watched 31 movies. It was amazing. Evil Dead was one of them. I fell in love! I watched it again this month so Sam could see it. She wasn't super impressed but she laughed. So that's good.
I don't think that there needs to be any description of Evil Dead, as it is classic and everyone should see it. I give it 7/10 for being so gat-danged ridiculous!
Movie #3: Evil Dead 2
Evil Dead 2 was a step up from the original. Same idea. A little more guano! (bat shit)
9/10 no question!
Movie #4: Dawn of the Dead (1978)
This movie was definitely a let down from the classic that was Night of the Living Dead. It was still decent, but it felt drawn out, and I didn't feel the emotion I got from Night.
4/10 watchable for fanatics like myself!
Movie #5: MarbleHornets
We all know the Found Footage genre that most people presume started with The Blair Witch Project in 1999. MarbleHornets isn't actually a movie. It is a youtube channel. Though you could take every video from the channel and watch it in order, and it would feel like a movie. Which is what I did.
The idea is a young filmmaker was filming a movie called Marble Hornets. The filmmaker went sorta crazy and decided to stop filming. We was going to throw away all of his footage, but his friend asked him to just give him the footage. So reluctantly he did. Then the filmmaker moved away. Some time later, this friend found all the footage in his closet and decided to watch it. This friend is the person who runs the Youtube Channel. He discovered some strange things and uploads a clip with some notes on why he thinks they're significant. Then he continues to do this, unravelling a mystery he stumbled into.
This is one of the most unique things Ive ever seen. Its incredibly creepy. I absolutely loved it. This definitely gets 10/10.
Movie #6: Day of the Dead
Again, like Dawn this movie felt drawn out, and just not as good at the ones preceding it. Its definitely watchable, especially for fanatics. 4/10
Movie #7: May
May is weird. I had no idea what to expect, and there is not way to expect this. May is a confused and disturbed woman. Obsessed with a doll given to her when she was young, she eventually turns all her torment towards building herself a new doll, out of HUMANS!! Doesn't sound like anything out of the ordinary right? Just watch it, its kinda fucked. Umm... I'll give this one a 6/10, I don't really know though.
Movie #8: An American Werewolf in London
I loved this movie, it was so fun, so strange, and just out of the ordinary. There's some genuine hilarious parts, and some great makeup and effects.
9/10 Its a must see for anyone who is a fan of horror in general.
Movie #9: Critters
The movie that took Gremlins a little bit further. This movie was clearly created in the wake of the Spielberg family horror. Luckily they're both great. Critters is a little more horror. Its just fun, creature killing goodness!
7/10 nothing spectacular, but good fun.
Movie #10: Meet the Feebles
Peter Jackson, the guy who made The Lord of the Rings, King Kong, Fear, and is now working on The Hobbit... he started out making fucked up, low budget horror flicks. His first film Bad Taste is #12 on this list. This was his second film. Imagine the Muppets as cokeheads. Yeah that's Meet the Feebles. Its not really a good film in any way. Its very unique, very strange, and theres only 2 instances you should watch this movie. 1- If you're interested in the history of Peter Jackson's career. 2- If you're a horror fanatic.
2/10 Kinda bad... yeah.
Movie #11: The Last Broadcast
Most people attribute the beginning of the 'Found Footage' genre of horror to 'The Blair Witch Project.' But this movie precedes it by a year, but the latter did popularize it for sure. Its an ultra low budget movie about a supernatural, reality, public access TV show. In the last year I've come to really like the found footage genre, and this movie, though not perfect in any way, feels pretty real. And is really likeable, if you enjoy the genre as well.
5/10 Has its flaws, but is fun for fans.
Movie #12: Bad Taste
This is Peter Jackson's first film. It looks and feels like a high school or college film, which it probably is. Its not good, don't watch it. Refer to #10.
2/10 Blah.
Movie #13: Red Eye
This movie wasn't really a horror. I didn't know anything about it before watching it. Its an okay movie, and I enjoyed it. But yeah. Not a horror, more of a thriller... And I like Cillian Murphy for sure.
7/10 Okay movie for anybody!
Movie #14: Critters 2
This movie is basically the same as the first movie. Just a little bit in the future. Its a fine watch, but don't watch it too soon after the first one!
6/10 The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Movie #15: Toolbox Murders
I wanted to see the original, but i couldn't find it anywhere, so I watched this one. Straight up, its a bad movie. But i actually enjoyed the ending. I dunno if it caught me off guard for some weird reason, or what it was. But it knocks the rating up a little bit. It wouldve been a 2.
4/10 For die hard horror fans.
Movie #16: Terrorvision
Holy campy horror, batman! This is the epitome of crappy 80's silly horror. Its a terrible movie, but its almost a pleasure to see how bad it is! And the monster is pretty neat too.
6/10 For fans of silly 80's horror movies.
Movie #17: Slither
I had no idea what to expect from this movie, but man, it has a great cast, including the main dude from Firefly. I don't want to spoil the movie for anyone, but its kind of a throwback to monster flicks from the good old days. But not totally. Its hard to explain...
9/10 Fans of horror will most likely enjoy this!
Movie #18: Monster Squad
I can't believe I didn't see this as a kid. Its so fun, and it has all the monsters in it. Its the only movie that has the quote Wolfman has nards! Its not really a horror, but it has all the classic monsters in it, so it counts!
8/10
Movie #19: The Thing (2011)
I haven't seen the 1950's original, but this one is definitely not as good as the 80's remake. I'd wager that the 80's one could be considered a classic. This one is an okay movie, but thats it.
5/10 You'll probably enjoy it.
Movie #20: The Deadly Spawn
This is a great movie for a horror fan, because the kid in it is a big horror fan. Its a silly, and fun, really strange movie from the early 80's. I did have a lot of fun with this movie, and I absolutely love the monster effects in it!
7/10 So fun!
Movie #21: Cabin in the Woods
Joss Whedon's amazing amalgamation of slasher, science fiction and fantasy.
10/10 Probably my favorite horror of all time. Just go fucking watch it.
Movie #22: Let Me In
This is the American remake of Let the Right One In, it was really good. I hear the original is infinitely better, which is saying a lot. I really need to see that one.
8/10 Unique and interesting vampire movie.
Movie #23: The Fourth Kind
This is the first horror movie in years to scare me at all. Mainly because I watched it without knowing what it was. The movie starts out with Mila Jovovich introducing herself, and explaining that she will be portraying the main character in the reenactments of real events. That sold me. The movie makes itself very believable. It freaked me out for days.
8/10 Okay movie, but great effort in horror.
Movie #24: The Poughkeepsie Tapes
By now we all know that I love the found footage genre. And this is no different. Its about a serial killer. Enjoy!
7/10 Genre fans will enjoy!
Movie #25: The Blob (Remake)
I don't know why I watched the remake first, but I definitely enjoyed it. I love alien movies, and this month I watched a LOT that start out the same way. An alien crash lands and the poor soul that sees it first is the first to die. So many movies start this way, they probably have a genre for it!
6/10 Enjoyable!
Movie #26: From Beyond
A HP Lovecraft story brought to the screen, though I think its loosely based on it. Its fun, and if you're a fan of Re-Animator, you may like this movie, it has a number of the actors and crew from it.
5/10 An okay movie.
Movie #27: Night of the Living Dead Remake
They honestly think that Romero's movies keep getting worse... I'm still gonna watch them all eventually tho. I hope I'm wrong, but this movie was not great. Granted, the original set the bar pretty high for zombie movies.
3/10 You can pass on this one.
Movie #28: 13 Ghosts
This was a fun movie! I love movies that have their own supernatural rules. I think thats what fascinated me most about this movie. I would like to know more about everything in this movie.
7/10 Interesting and fun!
Movie #29: Rosemary's Baby
This movie feels like Hitchcock, but its not. Its also not as good as Hitchcock. But I really enjoyed its slow tense pace. And the really creepy ending. There's no real shock in this movie, but its just a really well made thriller.
Movie #30: The Blob
Classic! Just classic, everything about it. I love it.
7/10 fans of horror from the 50's should definitely see it, but they probably already have...
Movie #31: Sinister
This was a bit of a surprise for me, I saw this with a few friends, and I didn't know much about it. It was really fun, watching this guy try to solve a mystery so he can write another book. It turns into something he just can't handle. Its nothing special, but I definitely enjoyed it!
7/10
Well that's that. I'm sorry I didn't write anything too entertaining. Your welcome for keeping it short.
Hope you guys enjoyed, and maybe discovered some movies you hadn't known about!

things:
1) film 10: meet the feeblesI loved, I did see it some 13 years ago, It lacked a story but had the 'entertainment' value that kept us watching.
2) I think you give "the tool box murders' too much credit, I turned it off after 35min!
you should see 'Let The Right One In'......It's atmosphere is amazing and effective, the 2 main characters seem more melancholy with a tighter bond, but I am biased.
Enjoy!
