Its funny how the tides change. In the 80's and 90's DC comic based movies were crazy popular. Back then Marvel movies were absolute failures. With the exception of Nolan's Batman films, the tides have completely turned.
Overall since 1978
DC Successful Films: 17
DC Failures: 5
Marvel Successful Films: 24
Marvel Failures: 6
(To see the comprehensive list, look below.)
Overall Marvel had more movies, which is why they had more failures as well.
But what matters is failure rate.
DC Failure Rate: 22.7%
Marvel Failure Rate: 20%
All things said, they're both doing just fine. Though Marvels recent success has yielded them 3.7 billion dollars in box office sales in the last 4 years. And DC in the last 4 years... 414 milliom. Though if we go back one more year, the dark knight would ad 1 billion to that total. And this coming year, the dark knight rises will probably add another billion. Though, if they're trying to fight off Marvel, its not going to work, because The Amazing Spiderman is going to do the same thing.
My whole point is here, DC Comics needs to grab the rights to the intellectual property by the balls. They need to take control, and find filmmakers that know thier characters and stories, and can adapt them to the screen in a way that the public will really appreciate. Like Christopher Nolan did with Batman, or Joss Whedon did with The Avengers.
