Mohawk Radio News Flash - Orange County Sheriffs Deputies Commit Hate Crime and Try to Hide It By Threatening the Victim!
On the evening of Jauary 19th, 2007 my good friend Brian Barcelo of Costa Mesa, California, was pulled over and brutally beaten by the Orange County Sheriffs Deputies and called a "fruitpicker" and a "wetback" among many other racial slurs. He was then hit in the back of the head one last time and told, "this never happened, got It?" If the hate crime alone wasn't horrible enough, he was pulled over on January 22nd, just three days later, by an Orange County Sheriffs Deputy and had his life threatened for filing a complaint against the Sheriffs Department and the deputies involved. He was told, "We told you not to say anything, do you realize your mom is all alone right now?" Brian's friend, Geoff Patton, just days later was stopped while walking on Newport blvd. in Costa Mesa. He was told to relay to Brian a message, "what happened, happened. Let it go or else."
Why is this so important to know? Because under the advise of counsel, Brian was told to tell as many people as possible about this to ensure his safety. Brain's brother, Kevin Barcelo, who is a full time student at University California Irvine, has been giving an open forum by his professors and has been sharing with each class the situation at hand.
The story starts as Brian is driving north on the 55 fwy. Brian is followed from Costa Mesa to Tustin, where he is pulled over on the side of the freeway near the 17th street exit. Brian was not speeding, had not been drinking or had any faulty equipment to warrant a legitimate reason to be pulled over. His only mistake was being a hispanic in a Mercedes as told in so many words by the deputies who asked him, "why is a beaner like you driving a car like this?"
After running Brian's driver's license and registration, they discover that the title for the vehicle has just bee tranfered from his father's name to his mother's name due to the recent passing of his father, Rueben Barcelo. This lead to one of the Sheriffs saying, "I hope your father has left you a great fruit-picking legacy," further humiliating Brian.
Rueben Barcelo, Brian's father, was an aero-space engineer and a legal US citzen who came to the U.S. in the 1950s. Rueben instilled family values, compassion and respect for the law and others in his sons. He loved America and what it stood for. Rueben was also a veteran.
Brian showed no resistance, yet was hogtied, pushed to the ground face first while being punched in the back of the head. From what Brian can remember, the back of his head was also stepped on. He also remebers one of the deputies laughing and saying "its fun hunting wetbacks." Brian was hit so hard in the back of the head while restrained, he blacked out. Brian guesses he was unconscious from 10 to 20 seconds, but can't be sure.
The DEA was called during the stop and showed up with a dog. Brian's car was thoroughly searched and sniffed, including the trunk and engine compartment. The vehicle was clean. Brian remembers the DEA being angry with the deputies saying, "I told you guys not to involve me in crap like this, this is the last time."
Brian was then slapped in the back of the head and told, "this never happened, got it?" and was released.
Brian was physially injured and severely traumatized. He went straight to the emergency room at the UCI hospital in Orange. He told the treating physicians that the injuries were caused by the depuites.
Brian, with the help of his brother Kevin, took pictures of the injuries immediately after the hospital visit. To show the damage to his head, Brian had to cut his hair off. The Barcelo's then called an attorney.
Then it happened again on January 22nd. Brian was again pulled over by the Orange County Sheriffs Deputies who had caught wind of Brian's pursuit of justice. He was told to step out of the vehicle and keep his back towards the deputies. He was then told to step backward towards their voices and not to turn around. He was hit it the back of the knees and forced to the ground. Again, Brian showed no resistance to warrant such aggresstion. Again he was hit in the back of the head. The position he was forced into was hurting his left leg. He told the deputies he had just had surgery a couple months prior and still was not completely healed. This probably wasn't a good idea, as the deputies now focused their abuse on that limb with their flashlights. This caused severe swelling and bruising. Unfortunately, even a week after the incident and it was still grotesquely swollen and purple and Brian can hardly walk.
Perhaps the deputies thought Brian was kidding about the leg and surgery. However, Brian does remeber that his pant leg rode up and upon seeing Brian's leg, one of the deputies exclaimed, "oh shit!"
The Barcelo family is afraid to leave their home and afraid to be alone. Kevin, Brain's brother is devastated, as is their mother. This is a great family and anyone would be honored to know them. Brian and Kevin are a major part of MohawkRadio and we are asking for you to be aware of this situation and raise as big a stink as you can in support of bringing these racists, asshole deputies to justice. With everyone's help, we hope to get as much media attention as possible to bring these hate crimes to light.
If anyone saw anything on the night of Janaury 19th on the 55 fwy north bound at or around 17th street between 5:00 - 6:00 PM, please email Kevin Barcelo or info@mohawkradio.com
Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Please share this story with as many people as possible.
