500 Years Ago, A Giant Eagle in New Zealand Was Possibly Eating Children
I just read the above article at io9.com. Its about the Haast Eagle, a prehistoric giant bird that preyed on other large flightless birds, the Moa. This appeals to me, not only because it's relevant to my own work and research, but also because of what might have been. Basically it is the and largest eagle known to have lived, it was the ultimate predator. In the article they suggest that it ate children. Can you imagine a big fuck-off monster of a bird swooping into your village and carrying off small kids? I've always kind of suspected they might have done this, but I'm pretty happy to see this confirmed in print.
As a New Zealander, I've always been kind of let down by our national icon, the Kiwi. I don't really feel that a nocturnal, flightless bird on the endangered species list says anything really positive as us as nation. It doesn't really embody any characteristics you can get behind if you're into patriotism.
The Haast Eagle on the other hand, if we still had them flying around scaring the living fuck out of people, that would make an awesome national icon.

Hey, thanks for accepting my friend request. I'm planning on moving to New Zealand next year and thought it might be cool to start trying to make friends. I agree with you about the kiwi....not much of a national icon.
