Listened to a good interview on the way to work today. How do you raise moral children? What does it mean to be moral, anyway? I think the person being interviewed (can't remember his name right now) hit the nail on the head. We worry waaaayyyy too much about our own happiness in this society. We think of our character as a tank that is filled with the praise that we get. The more praise, the more fill our tank. In fact it is the opposite, the more praise we get, the more cynical we become and the more selfish ultimately. It is important to figure out early in life that we have tremendous resources, each and every one of us, and that we actually will fair much better when we give to others without consideration for something in return. The more we give away, actually, the more self-esteem and ultimately the more happiness we have. It is difficult to do, however, if we have been raised to think about taking care of ourselves first and then taking care of others. If we focus on ourselves, we will never be satisfied. This is how marketing works and why we are a consumerist society...our desires are never fulfilled.
