Funkadesi's Crash Da Party is infinitely amusing to me on so many levels.
First off is the band itself. Go to their webpage and scroll about halfway down. You'll see a picture of the band. It looks like somebody went around the world, kidnapped 10 random people and said, "Alright, you're a band now. Makes some fucking music." The result is a very unique sound and not at all unpleasant. There are heavy reggae and Indian influences in many of their songs, with a hint of latin music. Mixing two of the most laid back genres of music makes for some very chill tracks. But seriously, the band photo looks like some cast photo for global real world.
The next thing that amuses me is a little further down their webpage, in the blurb underneath the picture. Apparently, President Obama is a fan. This alone isn't something that would be overly shocking or funny; Obama likes a lot of semi-contemporary music. What I find absolutely hilarious is the quote by Obama on the site, which includes the sentence, "There's a lot of funk in that desi." Now, it might just be me but when I think of Obama saying that sentence, it's fucking hilarious.
Anyway, on to the song itself. It's a pretty fun song but the lyrics are completely absurd to me at times. The part that really gets me is when the female singer comes in around 1:45 and starts singing in a foreign language, which I'm assuming is Hindi until somebody corrects me. Then out of NOWHERE at 1:58, she sings "Buffet Dinner" and goes right back to Hindi. Now, I know what you're thinking; It was probably just some word in Hindi that sounds like buffet dinner, but you'd be wrong. I looked it up in the lyrics book that came with the album. It lists out all the Hindi words and right there in the middle of them, "buffet dinner." Now, combine this with the chorus of the song, "Them crash da party, even before it started, them crash da party," and the message of the song seems to be that either the band or their friends are gonna show up early to your party, even though you didn't invite them, eat all your food, and then bail. I'm thinking I won't be inviting the band to my next party, particularly if I'm going to have a buffet dinner. Hmm...but that just gives them an excuse to crash it..fuck. Maybe I'll just make all beef dishes and hope the band's three Indian members are observant about the whole not eating cows thing. But that still leaves the other seven band members to eat all my food...DAMMIT this band is an unstoppable party crashing machine
