That old anti-social in me.
The bike relay from the Yukon to Alaska was one of the best experiences of my life. I want to write a lot about it, but I'm sort of uninspired for words at the moment. So a list, if you will, of the highlights:
- I saw my first grizzly bear, lazily eating dandilions by the side of the road. Apparently there was a black bear somewhere on the course but I didn't see it because the police were doing a good job of blocking it from the cyclists
- I saw numerous coyotes, ground squirrels, eagles (and seagles there's a story about that somewhere), huge ants, billions of mosquitos, an owl in flight in broad daylight, you get the picture.
- I took my first pee in REAL wilderness (and several thereafter).
- I saw the midnight sun. It's incredible, but makes it hard to sleep.
- I made friends with more than one caterpillar.
- I got to see some of the most beautiful, and untouched scenery in the whole of the world. It's so hard to imagine untouched land, but when you see it, boy do you believe it.
- I got to spend the weekend with some of the most genuine, incredible people of all ages and backgrounds. There is one thing that ties people together in the north and that is their love of life.
- I got to see hundreds and hundreds of cyclists struggle through every kind of weather (except snow, surprisingly).
- I got to be our teams official documentor. A role I relished and loved.
- I can't wait to go back up there, in just a couple of weeks.
Here are the first five photos from the weekend. There are a few more, but I might not post them all here, but they'll all be posted to my flickr account.
I'm not a bear

i have a hat with ears, and previously on the course there was a grizzly eating dandilions by the side of the road. i was wearing all brown, and crouched to take this photo, a team car drove by and thought i was a bear and were terrified until i stood up. much hilarity ensued. hence the title
Lonely Pup
There were a lot of dogs (as there always is up north) and they had to wait outside while we ate our yummy after race meal.
My view.

^^his flickr. when my laptop is up and running again, we'll both be able to update.
I have to start sending my film out to be developed. The places out here are fucking ridiculous. I'm about to pay $50 for one roll of velvia. I'm pissed.
