Today since I was off and it was my grandfather's birthday we went down to see him. His local paper did a really nice story about him turning 94 and some of the things he has done. It was sweet and he was touched. He was in a really good mood which is rare. His food mood was tinged with a bit of sadness because he found out one of his caregivers was ripping him off. He has a mother and daughter team that watch over him and the daughter, who is my age, evidently developed a raging heroin addiction over the last couple months and had been paying for it with his checkbook and credit card. He and the mom keep track of his money she writes checks and he signs them. The daughter had written herself about ten grand worth of check in the last couple months in small checks and took his card to STL to stock up on cigarettes. It was the mom that caught on first and she told him something was wrong. After they called my mom they went to the police. Once she figured out the gig was up she checked herself into a ninety day rehab but when she is done with that the cops are picking her up and taking her in. Beyond her theft charges she will probably be getting some charges regarding the welfare of her child who has subsequently been placed in the custody of her mom. The lady is super upset that her daughter ripped off my grandfather and that she neglected her granddaughter and every time she talks to my mom she is just in tears as more and more fucked up things keep coming out. My mom and grandfather are very grateful to her for honesty and her care of my grandfather even if her daughter is a fuck up. My cousin wanted to fire her too but she's a bitch and no one cares about her opinion so he gave the lady a raise. When I talked to my grandfather about it he said " Zach did you know that I bought a bunch of cigarettes and drugs? Can you believe it?" I told him not to tell too many people or the next time he's in the paper the article might not be so nice.
So in spite of that whole mess we had a nice lunch at an old state park lodge. It was the standard middle America family style service. It was a cool drive and we stopped and got some Calhoun peaches because they are always awesome. The girls were cute for him and made him cards and he seemed legitimately happy to see me which is not always the case. For some reason he considers my job a real career job and he is proud of it even though this is not even the most I've made or the most fiscally sound place I've worked. Oh well I am taking the fine young man point while I can get them. Also today one of my remaining great aunts died. She was 102.
Down where my grandfather lives is one of the few remaining places I know where cell phones are not an option. If you go down town and drive to the top of cemetery hill on alternate Tuesdays you can get two bars of cell service. Most people there don't even bother. I told them that at work and they were like " what do you mean you won't be able to be reached?" I said it's my day off and I am not giving you my grandfathers house number so you can call me about something stupid on my day off. They were flustrated but fuck em.
A couple days ago had his" oh shit my wife left me" nervous breakdown live on Facebook. He had recently befriended the wife so she told/showed me. He is one of my many bipolar friends and it was sad to see. One long rambly sentence chronicling every shifty thing in his life starting at age four til the present. It was pretty sad. Now another of my friends, also bipolar, is having that moment on Facebook, although via private message, with the wife right now. She has been feeding me the highlights and it sounds very familiar. She gets down and everyone is an asshole that just uses her so she pushes them away and then runs. These two ladies have a kid together though and even though she is the biological mother their parental rights are equal in the
eyes of the law and running away could get nasty since her partner is way the more sane and stable of the two. Damn that is some shit.
So that's my day. It looks pretty shitty when you write it all down like that but I am still doing well. My wife may be bald and pay the bills late but at least she isn't leaving me and taking my kids away. And I have a new strawberry rhubarb pie in the kitchen calling to me " hey fatboy I got what you need! Come over here and get some you know you want it. ". Oh pie you dirty girl come to daddy. Peace out SG.
