First roller derby practice today.
Birdy and I show up late, of course, not being morning people. But in all honesty I was up and about at 9am, after tossing and turning for an hour or so.
I was itchin' to go.
So everyone's already out on the rink when we get there, and Birdy and I go to get ye olde rental speed skates because we wanted to see if the whole thing was going to be lame or not before investing in killer quads.
We were met by some huckleberry Henrietta at the counter who informed us that they didn't have that many pairs left. Birdy managed to get a decent pair, but the only ones in my size had no stoppers and the left skate was ripped wide open at the heel and top side, making them impossible to skate in.
I didn't drive all that way out to BFE Arlington to NOT skate.
"Get me some duct tape! Can you take two stoppers off of another pair of skates and put them on these?"
So as they hooked me up with the stoppers, I had a guy duct tape me into the skates. Oh yeah, I was feelin' ghetto fabulous. I didn't care, with a little tweaking to the wheel nuts, they were skateable.
Unfortunately we had to share the rink with a group of speed skaters, and poor Birdy got body slammed about 10 minutes in when she misjudged oncoming traffic while crossing the track. Being the badass that she is, she shrugged it off while the guys went to get her some ice for a nice case of track rash on the elbow.
Did I mention that neither of us had pads? Well, okay...she had knee pads and wrist guards but no elbow pads. Lesson learned, I guess. Mental note: get pads immediately.
Practice was fun as hell, and despite my wobbly wonky skates I still showed I got my stuff. With a good pair of wheels, it's ON.
It doesn't feel like I'm doing much while I'm out there, even at full speed (but not true full speed for me because the skates were just too unstable) but I definitely feel the fatigue in my legs now.
Started doing jumps at low speed to get the feel for it, and that needs some serious work as well as my agility. But goddamn, I can't wait to get out to the rink again this week to get to work.
This is going to be pure awesomeness.

I took two advil before bed,
but this morning I could hardly get out of bed,
I am so fucked up.
My hip, my shoulder, my neck etc.
All these injuries pounced somewhere in the night.
I could tell people that my husband beats me,
but I don't have any husbands.
Besides,
I guess it's cooler to say it's all from Roller Derby.
I guess.
And we should totally do an SG Derby set.
Totally.
Before my bruises rink rash go away.
In beer form, or otherwise.
Hott.
Yeah though, I think I'd rather do a 70's Roller Disco set.
Do my hair up to it's full Farrah potential.
Yeah.
I think that would be even better.
