Last night's show was amazing!
I was running a little late because of traffic. I managed to get some decent Mexican food at a pretty restaurant a block down from the theater called Luna Nueva. Luna Nueva en Jueves? (anyone wanna guess the 80s reference?)
Bought a tshirt and lp when I got inside Variety Playhouse. The album came with a poster, booklet and cd. I already have the cd, but the poster and booklet were cool.
I ended up sitting center in the 7th row. I knew I'd have to end up standing during Grinderman because of the pit, but really needed to sit beforehand.
The opening act didn't sound anything like her video that I watched on youtube earlier. She didn't have band and played an odd accordian like contraption. I think the songs would have sounded better with more accompaniment. I saw one of the guys from Mastodon between sets.
Then Grinderman came out and killed it. Warren Ellis is a wild man and Nick Cave is possibly the best frontman I've seen. Martyn Casey and Jim Sclavunos are a great rhythm section. It's hard to pick a favorite moment or favorite song. Evil was one highlight because it's my current favorite track off of Grinderman 2. Warren Ellis sitting on the floor shouting Evil! or spazziing out on the ground and kicking his legs up when not vocalising was a show in itself. He was rarely still whether playing guitar, tenor guitar, violin or percussion. Apparently he has industrial strength maracas and highhat. Nick Cave played mostly guitar with a few turns on organ and a few songs where he just sang.
