HI Guys (geddit?) November 5th is traditionally known as Bonfire night in the UK. We celebrate the failure of the gunpowder plot by setting bonfires, eating a cake called Parkin, treacle toffee and black peas.
Guy Fawkes, along with his friends, attempted to murder the king by blowing up parlaiment with numerous barrels of gunpowder on Nov 5th 1604. They didn't want a Catholic king (religion again) and intended to replace him with his daughter Elizabeth. However, they did have Catholic friends within the house of lords and so sent a letter to one of them in October to warn him not to go anywhere near the parlaiment on Nov 5th. This letter eventually found its way to king James and the whole of the parlaiment buildings were searched. Guy Fawkes was found in the basement with the explosives and the rest, as they say, is history.
Take a good look at the picture. It is tradition for our children to make a "Guy" and throw him on the fire on bonfire night. In the days leading up to Nov 5th, local kids would go out and ask for "a penny for the guy" obviously these particular kids wanted more due to the rise in the cost of living! How ironic that these kids are asking for money, in the name of a terrorist, because they are poor, due to their government making bad decisions. ;-)
