I finally got out onto the road for a real ride. Janet and JoyfulDemise went to climb Heart Mountain today, so I hopped on my bike and pedaled out to meet them at the trailhead.
It was 85km of brutal gusting headwinds, and I was the only guy stupid enough to be pedaling west. The wind was so strong that I could only get up to 64kph coming down the big hill from scott lake, when usually I can get to 90 at least.
I did pass two incredibly hot chicks in the first 10km, both wearing those new shorty bike shorts that look so hot. Mmmmm yummie bike chicks. Did I mention the tiny little tank tops?
It took almost four hours to get a measly 85km, and my heart rate was way up for most of it. My legs are jello.
On the other hand, at least I didn't feel like a useless lazy bastard watching other people suffer in the tour.
Todays recipe is a pasta sauce...Shrimp and prociutto spagetti.
You need about 6 or 8 really big shrimp, the kind that look more like small lobsters, which you slice in two pieces lengthwise. This makes them curl up really pretty when they cook.
You also need 200g or thinly sliced prociutto, shredded into slivers about 2 inches long and 1/4" wide, a few thin sliced mushrooms and one clove of minced garlic. Some white wine, some cream, and some spagetti.
In a very hot frying pan, saute the strips of prosciutto until they start to crisp up. Add the mushrooms, and the garlic, stir until the mushrooms start to give up a little bit of their moisture. Add the shrimp, and toss till the shrimp are half cooked.
At this point, pull the shrimp back out of the pan, so they don't overcook. Pour in 1/2 cup white wine, let that reduce down to almost nothing, add 2 cups of heavy cream and a few grinds of pepper.
Let this cream mixture boil and reduce vigorously, and when it's thick enough to be called a sauce instead of a soup, add the shrimp back in. toss a few times, add spagetti for two people, toss and eat.
The sauce doesn't sound like the flavours would be all that memorable, but the ingredients feed synergistically off each outher to produce a really nice result. Serve with a juicy sauvignon blanc
