Today someone asked me what my favorite food was.
I thought about it for a long time, and decided that I could only answer the question if it was more specific.
For example, my favourite berry is the raspberry.
My favourite fruit is the cherry.
My favourite root vegetable is the carrot, followed closely by the potatoe.
My favourite vegetable is the sugar-snap (edible pod) pea.
My favourite shellfish is, of course, the scallop. It was almost octopus, but since I only like it raw, it lost out on versatility.
My favourite fin-fish is monkfish, which I almost never get to eat.
My favourite starchy grain (ie barley, rice etc) is rice, but wild rice (a completely different plant) was close.
My favourite fungus is the morel mushroom.
My favourite dairy food is cheese, and within that I would have to call it a tie between Stilton and Aged Parmesan.
My favourite condiment is balsamic vinegar.
My favourite oil is sesame.
My favourite nut is the cashew.
My favourite white-meat is porcupine, which I almost never get to eat. Wonderful dish, porcupine braised with bacon and white wine and parsley...
My favourite cured or preserved food is bacon, with smoked salmon a close second.
I guess what I learned from this is that food is a very complex subject for me, and an important one. I guess I am a foodie.
