Middle-aged Teens & Latex Skin. The 80s Horror Movies and my love for them!
So I picked up a 4 horror movie DVD pack for a whole $4.99 plus tax. I really broke the bank on this purchase. They were all 70s & 80s horror movies and after watching them, it occurred to me that I really enjoy watching these classics more so then todays horror flicks. The movies included The Funhouse, The Serpent & The Rainbow, Sssssss and Phantasm II.
The movie that stuck out to me and drew me to write this blog was Tobe Coopers The Funhouse who also directed many of my other favorites such as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Poltergeist and some of The Masters Of Horrors TV series to name a few. The Funhouse is about four teenagers that decide to stay the night at a creepy carnival and one by one, each start to drop off like flies. Well except for the virgin girl LOL. The bad boys look like they are in their 30s and the girls seem to throw themselves at the men err I mean boys LOL.
What attracts me to these kind of movies I believe is the stereotype rolls and the quality of the film back in the day. To me I find these older movies have a more scare fare effect when clearly it looks like a cheap 80s movie. Although I do have a heart for todays horror movies, I find todays movies are so realistic and the picture quality is damn near perfect with the use of HD, it practically prevents the audience to let their imagination play a role in the film itself. When I watched The Funhouse, my thoughts of being at a creepy carnival with the chance of seeing some freaks of nature, a creepy magic act and walk through The Funhouse made the movie so much more entertaining. The same thing goes for the original Halloween, Nightmare On Elm Steet and Friday the 13th. They all give you the freedom of imagination which in my opinion is the FEAR of all fears.
80s makeup effects and props amuses the hell out of me. Its so fake it could be real. When Jason Vorhees reveals his face after being covered up with a bag and hockey mask, it was so out of this world that maybe it could of been real. Or when you got the tour of Leatherfaces house in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre with all the furniture made out of human remains. Its so moving and suspenseful. Maybe this is why I can watch these movies over and over again. They never seem to become a dull re-run. Theres no complex character rolls to understand as most rolls follow that stereotype persona. But thats me. Dont get me wrong, I still love todays horror movies. Hostel, Saw, House of 1000 Corpses and remakes of The Hills Have Eyes and Halloween still are very entertaining.
Assuming you like horror movies, I would like to hear your thoughts on older vs newer horror films! What horror movies do you like?
