So I just read a post from @exning about why she became a SG (which I'd recommend reading) and it got me thinking. It started with the whole being over weight and the totality of it. How it affects individuals, how people view obesity, What's the source or reason for the predominate views in our society, causes of obesity, is it "OK" to be over weight from both a medical and social standpoint, If deemed negative how much should a person be held responsible for their "problem", how much should society or a culture be held responsible. The list could go on and on. But what I came to is it all really doesn't matter. The cruel fact is if you're" fat" you're going to get shunned one way or another and having a great personality may help in some ways but it's not going to get you in the sack with that hotty. I doubt it will even help get someone a date. And that really SUCKS! We come up with stupid adages like "it's what's on the inside that counts"(Although I'm not saying that what's inside isn't important) which I think is more for everyone else than for the over weight person. We want to believe we live in this wonderful world where everything is fair, and just as we said the treatment of people that are "fat", or "ugly", or handicapped is based on what is on the inside not the outside . We put on blinders to anything that might suggest other wise so that we can sleep at night guilt free of the fact that we've done nothing to change the cruel reality that really exists, So we don't toil over the disparities that they face every day. To some extent this may be for the best. No amount of toiling over the matter will change the evolutionary outcome of our genetic disposition toward being attracted to someone who is physically fit. Don't get me wrong, our views are definitely influenced by the media and have caused a gap between "our" expectations and reasonably realistic expectations. To me SG has tried to bridge that gap to some extent showing that there are many different kinds of beauty. Unfortunately SG is not immune to the pitfalls that afflict the majority of today's media. As SG grows the competition grows. In turn the ones that go pink, which I'm guessing are usually the most popular ones, get closer and closer to what we consider to be the ideal women. And like the snowball effect there's really no way to stop it. Anyhow, as I tend to do I have gotten off topic. I'm kind of tried so I will end with this. I guess I all too often realize that the world we live in is cruel and unfair, and is generally still driven by our primal desires. We walk elderly people across the street, give time and/or money to charities, lend aid to our friends and family so we can believe that we are more than just our carnal instincts and to some extent there may be truth in that. But I think we are driven by our animalistic cravings a lot more then we think or want to admit.
