Back from my first time in Canada. The land of unlimited possibilities AND free health care!
The place I visited for work is in the middle of suburbian nowhere, the kind of scenery most familiar to us from the counterculture it spawned. Seeing the original is rather like a double negative.
Toronto was cool though, we got a local guide and saw some nice bars, unfortunately the weather wasn't suited for extended exploration. There, too, the overall atmosphere was strangely familiar. We've seen it in the movies, and indeed walking through there felt rather like walking through a film set.
Speaking of weather though, I flew in from southern France. So you're going to Canada you expect cold, right? Yeah right, it was ridiculously hot and humid the first couple of days.
The overall cultural difference to Europe is just amazing, even in Canada. The professional friendliness and ubiquitous (vapid) smiles in particular. One corollary to this is that the English are manifestly European, even if they don't realize it.
Fun fun fun...

Ah, how interesting. Are your parents educators? If you could choose, where would you like to work on your PhD?
