So I've been seeing a great deal of Suicide Girls do their homework on what superpower that would have, and that's a brilliant question really. If you could bend the fabric of reality, the laws of physics, and perform a feat so incredible that you could use such powers for right or wrong and make that big a difference, what would it be?
Interesting addition: Let's say you want super speed, but you end up having skin that's harder than Kevlar, how disappointing are you that you don't have the applications you'd like? How would you then put it to use? What if you just had the greatest hand eye coordination ever?
I grew up reading a set of books called the Xanth series. My dad introduced me to it, and it was written by Piers Anthony (or Pier Xanthony... Get it? Eh?). In any case, in this world, Xanth was a land of magic. I don't mean that Xanth was a land in which magic existed. Damned place was magic. Magic defined it and everything that was involved with it. Need slippers? Pull them off a slipper tree in your size. Walking through to woods? Careful, that weeping willow might have a magical protection on it that causes you to weep uncontrollably until you lose consciousness. In Xanth, every citizen has a "Talent". You either are, by your very nature, magic, or you have a magic spell or ability. In some cases, some people can bring about thunderous storms and hulking earthquakes, or have magic that will rebuff any magical threat to their physical being. Other people can pee on command in the color of their choice, or are just really ambidextrous, or can spit a really long way. Your talent is literally so random you could be born with the ability to make daisies pop up wherever you walk. The reason I bring this up is because it's always made me wonder "What if I did have a talent, and I got stuck with a "useless" talent? Would I really be sad? What would I do with it?
That being said, this isn't a blog about what if I got a random talent I didn't want, it's about what talent I would like to have, and to that, I have given so much thought. I wouldn't want any one person's power, I would like to combine several powers into one concept. Let us think... Green Lantern/Hulk/Gambit(esque).
Follow along now. The green Lantern gets his power from the Green ring he carries, which manifests his will into any shape he makes it out to be. This weapon is limited only by his willpower and his imagination, and as long as he stays strong of mind, he has great power. Sure, intelligence, imagination, and forethought are awesome, but let's not take a look at the hulk.
That is not the face of reason and imagination. That's the face of passion and rage. The idea of manipulating the world around me based on how strongly my emotions feel is a far more brilliant concept to me than that of my willpower. People have their willpower crushed all the time. We're human, and no one is immune to this. It is when the primal, base portion of the brain kicks in that bring our your real side, and keeps you fighting. Superheroes are constantly being dragged into battles that they don't care about, and being used for their powers, now imagine that your powers only work if you give a crap. Not passionate about this? Your powers are going to flop. Super villain kidnapped your love?
You wanna meet the real me now? (looking for an excuse to quote Mal), also take this pictures ladies, you're welcome
SO how does Gambit fit into this? Easy. I find telekinesis boring. It's overdone, over played. I would rather be able to manipulate objects with kinetic energy. Make objects explode, go sailing through the air at incredible velocities, or when I throw a cueball, impart so much kinetic energy into the throw that it basically becomes a bullet. The applications would be brilliant and devastating. So that's my power. Passion powered manipulation of objects via kinetic energy
Thanks for reading!
