I feel like writing something today, but I don't know what to write about. I'm getting a job and my license over summer That's about it...Yesterday I saw "Factory Girl" for the first time. Yes for the first time. I love Edie Sedgwick and I was really critical about the film. Of course the film is not accurate but it's pretty good for what it is. Sienna Miller is okay. She looks very similar to her and she played her pretty well, but again it wasn't very accurate. If you want to see a great film about Edie Sedgwick watch "Ciao Manhattan!". Edie plays herself in the film. Other then that I'm planning differnt events for the next upcoming weekends
As I promised, well I didn't promise but said I would post... Here's an article I wrote in the school newspaper about Bettie Page. I got complaints for this article, but being that my journalism teacher is so cool, he stood up for me and took care of the situation. I forgot to mention Day of Silence. The DOS protest went well at my school except for all of the annoying freshmen... I'm so glad school is almost over.
And I'm so glad I finished putting together the newspaper and magazine...
Okay so here's my article. There may be some errors, I hope you enjoy this piece!
"Bettie Page: The Pin-Up Sensation that Shocked the Nation"
I want to be remembered as the woman who changed peoples perspectives concerning nudity in its natural form.
-Bettie Page
The sheer thigh high stockings, the seven inch heels, the black lingerie, the risqu bondage accessories and all the memorable, cute, vintage poses and photos is what most people will remember of pin-up legend Bettie Page.
On Thursday, December 11th of 2008, pin-up legend Bettie Page died of heart failures in a hospital in Los Angeles. She was 85 years old. As news broke, first from her official webpage, and then from other websites, groups began posting comments and memorials for the pin-up legend.
Missy Suicide, founder of cult website Suicide Girls, released a statement on her suicide girls account stating, (Bettie Page was) the original Suicide Girl and inspiration for all that we do has passed. She inspired all those who celebrate real beauty, sensuality and sexuality. She changed the way that women felt about themselves and their bodies
Burlesque dancer and model, Dita Von Teese, also commented on Pages death, stating, She taught me that individuality is the keyShe had a sense of freedom and sexual liberation. Without women like Bettie that paved the way all those years ago, there would be no place for me
Other groups and celebrities commented on her influence and legacy. Though most remember the glamour of Pages modeling and acting career, many bypass the harsh moments Page experienced in her life.
According to the biography section of her official website, Bettie Page was born on April 22, 1923, to a strict religious family. At a young age Pages parents divorced and she and her two sisters were placed in an orphanage while her mother saved up as much money as she could. It was also stated that Page was molested by her father during her childhood.
As a teenager Page was involved with many extra-curricular activities such as Drama, Journalism, Yearbook, and Student Council and took many classes at her local community center. She then attended and earned a bachelors degree in arts from Peabody College and moved to San Francisco.
After a failed marriage Page moved to New York in 1950 and while visiting Coney Island and its beaches Jerry Tibbs, a policeman and photographer, asked Page to model. It would be here where Page began her pin-up portfolio and began to change her style.
Since then Page was introduced to an array of photographers such as Cass Carr and modeled for a variety of underground mens magazines such as Wink and Beauty Parade beginning in the year 1951. Bettie Page also modeled for a wide assortment of camera clubs which were places and associations in the late 1940s which promoted artistic photography, but many were merely fronts for the making of pornography.
It wasnt until 1952 when Irving Klaw, a photographer and adult film director, helped her achieve and find her signature look and become successful. That wink of the eye that she mixed with exotic fetishism, with an added dash of humor and sense of playfulness is what made her memorable, said by Dita Von Teese regarding Pages presence and popular style in her photos.
Most remember the photos of Page with bondage accessories and poses reminiscent of a dominatrix. Page usually modeled with lingerie, little or no clothes at all and her poses and pictures are considered a bit contradictory. Sweet yet highly sexual, naughty but definitely nice.
Whats also interesting to notice about her pin-up photos compared to modern photos is that most people today would consider Page to be plus-size. Ms. Lazzarini, an English teacher here at Helix commented on her style and presence stating, (Bettie Page was) absolutely beautifulshe represents the natural healthy, voluptuous, beautiful woman. She was very Rubenesque. Her curvaceous body was another factor that made her so desirable and wanted by men. Page among the underground adult industry was dubbed The Queen of Curves.
With Klaws successful mail order business, Page became the first famous bondage model as well as starred in a variety of Burlesque films and had some acting roles on Broadway and T.V.
In 1954 Page, during her usual pilgrimage to Miami, Florida, was photographed by acclaimed photographers Jan Caldwell, H. W. Hannau and former pin-up model Bunny Yeager.
Page reached her height of popularity in 1955 when Hugh Hefner, founder of the fairly young magazine Playboy, published some photos Yeager took of Bettie Page for the January issue. Her photos were placed in the highly coveted centerfold and was tilted the Playmate of the Month.
Page continued to gain popularity and modeled until 1957. Towards the late 50s Page began to receive bad publicity and criticism from a wide variety of political and religious groups. The U.S. Congress in the late 50s asked Page to testify in a hearing regarding juvenile delinquency and the affects pornography had on young adults at the time. Page was released from attending these sessions, though many religious and conservative groups blamed Bettie Page and other adult media sources for delinquency among teenagers and for changing societys traditional values.
An important and interesting fact that may come as a surprise to many is that Bettie Page, for most of her life, including her years of modeling, was a devote Christian and would often use religious examples to justify her work. In Pages obituary released in a Los Angeles newspaper a quote by Page stated, Being nude was something I enjoyed, it felt so natural. There is nothing disgraceful concerning nudity unless one is being promiscuous about it. Dont forget the Bible says when God created Adam and Eve, they were stark naked. Who can argue with that?
Some of Pages ideas would be considered somewhat conservative. On the Quotes section of her main website Page expressed her feelings on promiscuity, stating, "Sex is a part of love. You shouldn't go around doing it unless you are in love, as well as a statement regarding her infamous S+M pin-up photos. I never understood how anyone believed those poses were sexy. To be tied up? I dont get it.
Bettie Page as well expressed her feelings on her life-long influence among women in a rare interview in 2005. Young women write me untold numbers of letters. They look up to me. They thank me for helping them see how they can be themselves or how they can reinvent themselves, assert themselves, lose their inhibitions, and come out of their shells I am gratified to see that what I did so long ago has meant something to so many.
Many see Page as a woman who helped enhance womans liberation and the sexual revolution. An anonymous student at Helix believes, She helped changed the way people modeled and changed the typical standard of beauty and made it okay for every woman to feel beauty and to have fun. Ms. Lazzarini as well commented on this claim stating, Theres a fine line between embracing ones sexuality and objectification in other words seeing sexuality as a healthy normal part of life vs. seeing women only as objects just to fulfill ones pleasure. So many years in our culture women were denied their sexuality so in that way she was a great pioneer. Yet some see Pages legacy and work that has hindered the respect and reputation of woman.
Sadly, because of her modeling for many years, Page received a lack of intimacy and disrespect among most men who saw her as a prize and an object rather than the sweet and smart person she was. From 1957 and on Page went through tough events and obstacles in her life.
According the Richard Fosters biography on Page, during most of the 60s and 70s Page was hospitalized on various occasions for mental illness and was also arrest in the early 70s. Page began to attend weekly mass gatherings and bible study in a small church in Miami, Florida, and later in Los Angeles. Page ultimately hid away from the public during these years. It wasnt until recently that Page came out and began to talk about her past work, personal life influence and the revival that began in the 80s.
Though Page had a mostly troubled life, many choose to celebrate her struggles and legacy. The Bettie Page revival began in the 1980s when comic book artist Olivia, Dave Stevens, and Robert Blue began creating characters reminiscent of Page. Since then many models, actresses, film television and book characters duplicate Pages classic style. Some of her main and biggest influences include Madonna, Dita Von Teese, a burlesque dancer who has made a living modeling and reenacting Pages style of burlesque dancing and clothing in recent years as well as the cult website Suicide Girls. Missy Suicide Founder of this website, which allows women from different countries and of all ages as well as women of large or small weight to pose nude and show their beauty to the public, has stated in the photographic book SuicideGirls: Beauty Redefined, The SuicideGirl look is reminiscent of vintage Betty Page and Bunny Yeager photos, but with a decisively 21st century edge.
Page is also an icon among the rockabilly sub-culture and with women who model rockabilly clothing such as Bernie Dexter. Her style of clothing is worn by many women and of course her hairstyle as well.
Bettie Pages life and legacy remains to be seen and talked about. The tagline for Mary Harrons 2006 biographical film The Notorious Bettie Page explains her legacy well. The pin-up sensation that shocked the nation. Her risqu photos and modeling were way ahead of her time. She inspired people to look different at nudity. She didnt think that posing for fetish pin-ups or nudes was dirty or wrong, expressed Dita Von Teese. Page disbanded her inhibitions and the sexual taboos she faced during her time. With that she inspired other woman as well to find confidence and inspired people to change their attitude on sexuality as well.
