I know this is an old post but I thought I would comment anyway. I worked at two banks in the call centers, big national banks. At both banks we had up to around $50 dollars to refund if the customer asked for it. At one of the banks the checking acct system made you jump through hoops to waive a fee so most of the people I worked with would not even try to waive the fee. The credit card system at both were easy as a click and one of the systems even gave you and amount you could give back that was even over any of the fees they may have had. Just because they were a "Highly Valued Customer", meaning they had a lot of accts with the bank and we made a lot of money off of them. So, over limit fee $35, Late fee $35, Annual fee $50 and the real money they owed us was the minimum payment (fees + 2% of balance or $35/ which ever one was higher) Lets say it was $50. They were out of town and missed the payment. A late fee was assets and then this caused an over limit fee and then their Annual fee was added also. Their next bill would have all the fees + missed payment + new payment = about $220 This was about 3 years ago and how there is a law that states that a bank can't charge fees for other fees. Meaning they can no longer get charged an over limit fee for the banks late fee causing them to go over limit. But, thing get mixed up and lazy employees often don't check. They just assume the system is correct and some can't even read the different reports or screens they have to go into to see if it is a bank error or customer error. Some of the banks still us DOS based systems which require the user to type in a screen number to view that info. There are hundreds of these screens and some are block to most people depending on there job. Most people are only taught the basic screens to look at and often everyone at the banking center don't know any more then that.
At the big call centers there are multiple departments( Retention, Collections, Customer Service, etc.) Each of these departments have a team that deals with the escalated calls. So if you ask to speak to their supervisor, in many cases you will be transferred to that team and in may cases the two employees will not even know each other and may not even be in the same state. The plus side of the call center is that these employees transfer in and out of the different departments and carry that knowledge of the different screens with them so by the time they reach "Team Lead", "Team Supervisor" or "Manager" They know the system pretty well and can find anything and even change the history time line for you.
The short of it. If you call to the 800 number you will more then likely get a more knowledgeable, better trained and better monitored bank employee. Hell most of the people at the banking centers don't know jack have a high turn over rate and can't even tell you about the different programs and options you, the customer, has. If the banking center's manager is a piece of shit asshole, their employees will be too, because there is no real moderating.
Take the money. It is your just for putting up with the bad attitude and it shows or reflects to the higher ups of the banking centers mistakes.
