I had a moment of sublime childhood today. I see too many little kids that are full on bastards from lack of attention. This child was different. He was making a cat's cradle with string and he was very intent on it. Suddenly he looked up at me and said, " Put your hand in it". So I did. He moved the string around my hand in a somewhat practiced way. He told me to put my hand through the new knots. So I did. He pulled his ends and the string tightened and then fell away from my hand. He'd made a very complex slip knot. I reacted as though he'd summoned a fairy for me to talk to about what it's like to drink nectar all day. He seemed very pleased. His sister not to be outdone made an eiffel tower out of string for me. Today was an utter hole, but that was something that mattered.
