SUPER HAPPY FUNTIME BURLESQUE
SPOILERS! (Click to view)
I arrived at the Wealthy Theatre, approximately 15 minutes early for a show titled Super Happy Funtime. I was not familiar with this show, but in my mind, it was the closest thing I could get to a Rocky Horror Picture showing. When I entered the theatre, I quickly realized I should have shown up sooner, as almost all of the seats are occupied.
It was no big deal though; there were still seats available, in the back. (Okay, yes, I was slightly bothered that I was way in the back. But honestly, who wants to be stuck in the back of a theatre for a live performance?) Continuing onwe took our seats, and after being in awe of how packed the place was for a few minutes, the show began.
My expectations of the show were that it would probably no, indefinitely, involve sexuality in some form. But, being a serious Rocky Horror fan, I knew I would not find any of it offensive or distasteful. I was now on the edge of my seat, shivering with antici- - -pation!
From the moment it began, it had me captured like a lightning bug stuck inside a glass jar from some child who wants keep it there, as long as possible, to witness the magic of its flickering glow. In a sense, I was glowing with joy, with awe, and admiration for everyone who was a part of Super Happy Funtime. Yet, I was also like the child witnessing something amazing, something magical.
The show continued to live up to my high expectations, which I had set for it within the first five minutes, for the duration of the show, which was a surprising two hours. I left there that night with a new appreciation for an art, a performance, and most importantly musical theatre; one so uncut, yet tastefully hilarious, all at the same time.
If I have failed to convince you that this show is ridiculously good, I at least hope I have succeeded in making you curious enough to discover this breathtaking performance for yourself. I promise you, the only regret you will ever have with this is that you didn't see it sooner.
