Ugh. I felt terrible this morning. The SG show was pretty entertaining for the most part. I didn't really care for the bands, Metro beer is expensive ($4 for domestic draught), and we couldn't find anyone at the show because I was super late getting back to the city. I hate being on call on days when I'm travelling because I always know something will get screwed up. So anyway (this is for you kealli) here's my review of the show:
I got inside about 20 minutes after the show had started and the place was already packed. The band playing was called Threefold. They weren't anything special, but in all fairness we only heard 3 or 4 of their songs which mostly sounded the same. While they were playing we wandered around looking for people.
*NOTE: "fuck me boots" as they are called were a major theme for girls attending the show. Lots of women were playing up the schoolgirl look, as well as the disheveled leather hipster look.*
I was very surprised to see a very diverse crowd of people. It was a 21+ show, and I saw plenty of 40+ people around. LOTS of 45-55 year old men just standing around checking out the women in the audience and getting their perve on. I saw lots of people having fun though and that's the most important part.
The main band on the tour, Bloom, went on at about 8:45 or so, and were not very impressive. The singer was trying to pull that new fad of vocal styling where you sing in a shrill, 80's metal kinda way, but try to make it sound indie rock. Terrible terrible trend in my book, but not as bad as The Darkness' singer. Also, Bloom had a habit of trying to be "different" with the time in their songs, but it just ended up being expected and boring. For 4 songs in a row, the guitarist would end the song with a solo, while the time of the song changed from 4/4 time to: 3 measures of 4/4, one measure of 2/4. It was annoying. Last note: the guitarist thought he was Joey Santiago of the Pixies i'm sure. Every guitar effect came straight off of Doolittle, as well as his angry sounding solos that consisted of pitch slides and such.
*NOTE: I'm a music nazi so ignore me if these comments piss you off. These are just one person's observations.*
After the two bands played, the Suicidegirls took the stage. The first dance they came out to do was NOT in fact burlesque....it was cabaret. This was pointed out by two very hilariously drunk gay men standing to my left. Over the course of their entire performance, lots of different styles of music were played, and many different outfits of lingerie were worn. My personal favorite moments were:
1. A dance off to ODB's 'Baby I Got Yo' Money'
2. A dance to 'Baby Got Back'
3. A strip to some country song about pussy
Overall I have to unfortunately say it wasn't that great. It was fun, but not what I was expecting I guess. There are only so many ways you can partially get naked in front of a crowd of people, and they did them all with a great amount of proficiency. I'll give it a B-.
After the show was the most fun. We met up with sunburntkamel, Ophelia and Tetsua. Most fun I've had in a while. I don't know why everyone seems nicer than me. Tetsua was fucking hilarious and got my woman drunk at the smartbar. Ophelia and SBK are two of the most insanely nice people i've ever met in my life, and I felt like a dick for having them see me when i'm hyper and drinking. I played that damn Golden Tee golf game in a bar. Spent a lot of money on booze, then we headed over to pouty's place for the afterparty. That was the whole experience, and this is the third longest post in SG history. Sorry for the typos I don't feel like proofreading right now. Back to feeling better.
