The great thing about having a friend that runs a movie theater is that sometimes you get to see movies a few days before they come out. Such is the case with Spider Man 2.
Sam Raimi said that the worst CGI shots in Spiderman 2 are on par with the best in Spidey 1. At times, watching a digital image of Toby Maguire in the air can cause one to feel faint, almost dizzy. You see his digital twin dance in the air, inches from semi trucks and cute girls.
The movie (according to my comic loving friend) stayed insanely true to the original comic. This is another area in which Raimi excells. He got the job based on his love for the character.
The movie, as in the comic book, centers not around action, but on Pete Parker, a struggling college student caught up trying to define himself. As Spider man, he is a hero. As Parker, he is a loser, never able to obtain a single goal. MJ? Nope. she's getting married. Harry? Peter doesn't return his calls. His grades? Peter the genious is on the verge of failing.
So what happens when Spidey's powers start to fail on him?
When the web slinger can no longer produce webbing, what's left?
He hangs up his bug suit and become peter parker, the boy genious in love with his best friend. The movie is about this struggle. How can peter parker balance his alter ego. Yeah, this was attepted in one of the shitty bat man sequals, but Raimi plays it off much better.
Fans of Rami's older work will find several suttle nods and inside jokes. You can see a quick shot of "the classic." Bruce Campbel makes a guest appearence. So does a chainsaw. And there is a shot lifter directly out of Evil Dead. Remember when scotty looks out the window? Watch for it when Doc Oc First comes to Harry.
What can i say to sum it up? It blew the original out of the water.
