After seeing the trailer for Man On Fire, i thought it would be another dumb revenge-action movie that, since Sept 11, has been so popular in American Cinema. But after a friend came home from the movie on the verge of tears, i decided i had to check it out.
It was amazing. The back drop for the film is the situation in Juarez (sp?). If you have seen the video for At The Drive-In's "Invalid Litter Department" you know what i'm talking about. Hundereds of women each year are raped and murdered walking home from Marquiladoras, plants set up by the American gov't for cheap mexican labor. Every murder remains unsolved. Some feel the police are involved or do not care.
One thing that kept me from submerging into the film was the pair of ladies sitting next to me, talkin loudly through out the film. With a theater that was damn near empty (only 7 people total), they decided they needed to sit in the same row as I was, three seats down. I tired to convey to them that they needed to "shut the hell up" in the nicest way possible.
After the movie i was furious. THEY ACTUALLY TALKED THROUGH THE WHOLE ENDING!! Any one who has seen this movie knows how emotional it is. I was denied part of that emotion.
I got out of the theater as soon as possible. My blood was boiling and i didn't really feel like murdering two old women (well 40's and 50's maybe). So i ducked into the bathroom. But when i got out they were there.
"So you enjoyed the movie?" i asked.
"uh... yeah," they said looking at me like "why the fuck are you talking to us?"
"Oh that's great. So do i talk to you or the manager to get my $8.50 back?"
"What the hell are you talking about?"
"My $8.50. You two just came out of Man On Fire, where you talked the whole damn time. Now, are you going to give me my $8.50 since YOU ruined the movie, or do i have to make to poor manager give me the money He deserves?"
At this point they began to walk away from me as i got more and more pissed (keep in mind i would never EVER put any of these women in physical danger, and notice my lack of cussing in front of them). The funny thing was the theater employees were three feet way this whole time. You'd think that when these women started to run and left out throught the mall to avoid me, that the employees would have attempted to calm me down, or bring me to the manager. Nope. They just stared at me.
I'm done with this talking in movies bullshit. I went to a showing during the week because, well, weekends are just too damn dangerous at theaters. Parents can't get baby sitters so they bring thier little kids to 11:30 pm showings. Too many cell phones go off and there are too many 16 year old kids sneaking into movies and gabbing about how cute "billy" the school QB is.
I think it's time for all of us, anyone who has ever been pissed off at a cell phone, a baby, or someone talking during a movie to rise up and say "We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it any more!!"
