so some of you locals may have heard about the 20 year old woman falling to her death inside of the Bunge gain elevator just outside of the dinkytown area.
i used to live about 2 blocks from this complex. after my first year of college, i moved to uptown, yet still parked over there simply because it was free. Everyday and night, i would walk past the grain elevator, see people breaking in, see people tagging the building, wonder when it would finally be torn down.
I never went inside, mostly because... why the fuck would i want to? a good view of the city? fucki i can get that anywhere. i don't graffiti. i can legally drink anywhere and don't need a cool hang out to do it.
last week, my girlfriend's roommate fell to her death after going inside the bunge tower. here

and here
I only met here three or four times as she lived upstairs, but she always greated me with a smile on her face, was nice, charasmatic, and all around a great person.
she died at twenty doing something stupid yes, but how many of us do something stupid from 16-24 that could get us killed. we climb above train track and drink, we drink to excess, we walk out on roofs. i remember telling my father of the incident and how i somewhat new the woman who fell. he said that he knew it was something stupid, but it makes him remember all of the stupid stuff he did when he was younger.
i too flashed back to all of the incidents where i could have perished following a close call, s lip of balance, or something even more minor.
the fact is, kids will comtinue to enter the bunge tower. even with a padlock (who of us, if they wanted to, couldn't break a pad lock?). It's a draw for somereason. Just like the caves in st paul where so many have lost thier lives due to poor Oxygen or a deadly fall.
The building needs to be torn down. The paper says it's patrolled constantly but living near it, waling past it for 4 years, i can say thats bullshit and mean it.
Burn it to the fucking ground.
Bulid cheap housing.
Make sure that this isn't going to happen again.
a 20 year old gilr (chirst... 20! that is so fucking young!!) passed away in part on her own fault and in part on someone else's because this buliding stands.
fucking tear it down.

though the high light of my day came after finishing my taxes. I walked outside for a quick smoke to see 3 kids snapping photos of my house. i live where tommy and bob stinson grew up, famed members of the replacements.
I gave the kids (who were on tour from chicago) a quick tour. Then i pointed them in the direction of treehouse records and the CC club. Acting like a tour guide for my favorite band brought a smile to my face
