Someone told me a while back that people are, to an extent, programmed to find the exotic attractive. It is supposedly a natural mechanism to ensure healthy diversity in the gene pool, much the same way as men are encoded to like breasts because they indicate a good potential mother of our offspring. That kind of takes some of the magic out of it. I just think boobs are awesome.
Anyway, I was thinking about it recently and I'm not sure I'm not finding things that are more familiar attractive. When I was in varsity I used to have this thing for Indian girls. I never actually went out with any, but I always found them particularly attractive. However, I went to Varsity in Durban, where Indians are the largest demographic group, so it stands to reason that I would be seeing more pretty Indian girls around than any others, so perhaps it was that I was more used to them as much as any perceived "exotic-ness". As I've got older and tend to move in more insular circles, I've found this is not necessarily the case any longer. I still think there are some really pretty Indian girls out there, it's just the attraction is not really there anymore. I'm finding recently that I'm more attracted to athletic looking women, which is likely because more recently that's the sort of attractive woman than I'm more commonly around. I suppose it would stand to reason that you would start to like what you can see, imagination only takes you so far.
I was also thinking that this shouldn't be about how I no longer find Indian women attractive or that I don't like non-athletic women (not that you should care at all what my preferences are). I had an ex who once asked me what sort of girl I'd usually go for and it turned out it wasn't necessarily a type that she conformed to, and she was quite upset by this. Maybe honesty wasn't the best policy, but it didn't matter to me, I liked her for who and what she was. A lot of girls seem to worry that they don't fit a certain type, but that's not really right. You are all beautiful in your own way. It may not appeal to everyone, but that's just how people are (there's always someone who doesn't like peaches), it doesn't change the fact. And sometimes people just need exposure to it to appreciate it. There's a lot of stuff on this site about "alternative beauty", which I think is bullshit. It's just beauty.
