It's good to be appreciated, but bad to be taken advantage of.
So back in September, I reluctantly started working at the tuxedo shop again. The bosses were going to Italy for two weeks, and they needed someone to run the store and manage things while they were away. So I took care of things, and they came back quite happy with my performance.
A few weeks later, Angela (one of my bosses) talks to me aside and tells me how she and Joe are quite happy with my work, and are thinking about making me a manager, and she wanted to see if I was interested. I told her I would have to think about it and we didn't get into any specifics.
Now 3 weeks ago we start talking in much greater detail. They are looking to open a store in Waterbury by march, which means my 45 minute commute to work becomes 5 minutes But currently I am working 25 hours and I have Fridays and Saturdays off completely to take care of things and do recording gigs. I agreed reluctantly to work open till about 5 on these days which would leave me the evenings for gigs.
So now Angela talks to me yesterday and they want to make me a manager now, instead of waiting till the new store opens. In addition, she wants one of those weekend days, either Fri or Sat, to be evening hours. Which means effectively I will only have one evening a week with which to try and get my recording business up and running and pursue my career. I will still have my internship at the studio twice a week.
But I can't help but feel like I am being taken advantage of. I understand it's because our shop is in the mall, so our hours become extended. More and more I am feeling like this job will prevent me from getting my career going, and that more and more I will be taken advantage of. Yeah sure the paycheck will be great, but this is starting to be a real pain in the ass, and it hasn't even taken effect yet!
