All right you wankers, you wanted a new blog, so here goes:
I saw District 9 on the weekend. Pretty intense flick and you are on the edge of your seat either squirming or due to the high-end action. I haven't decided if it's a "good" movie, but it sure was fun. As usual Jackson delivers a flawless F/X film, with all the realism of LOTR. They're smooth and seamless with the live action. The story is quite original (at least for a blockbuster) and moves on with good pacing. It never lets you relax. It could have used a bit more depth on the "how did they get this way" front. Something that will no doubt be addressed on the extended DVD version that Jackson will likely put out at some point in the future.
Character development is fairly strong for the genre as the main character, in particular, goes through a personality change as profound as the physical one he endures. The acting is fairly solid from a cast of unknowns (at least to North American eyes).
Definitely worth seeing on the big screen with the big effects and the big sound.
In unrelated news, my birthday is on Thursday, and I will no doubt be seeing you Geezers in chat that night.
