I've been reading Winter's Tale all morning, and i must say its good for the old constitution. I feel positively fit as a fiddle.
I've been thinking about Nicola Tesla a lot recently, here is why:
when i was a senior in highschool, about two weeks before graduation, our little class (24 kids in all) took a trip to montauk long island to hang out for a couple days. Most of the time we were getting drunk, and I was making failed attempts toward the love of my adolescent life. But one of the nights something a little different went down (now i wish this story could go where it seems like it wants to go, but unfortunately this tale is rated pg, well maybe pg-13 if i were to mention all the marijuana cigarettes that were being smoked. done and done) instead of drinking ourselves into a spiraling oblivion, we rallied behind the suggestion of one of our peers to go investigate a "creepy abandoned military base". Now at the time I scarcely knew what thte Philidelphia Experiment was and had definitely not heard of the Montauk Project. So it seemed like a great idea to smoke a blunt and then wander around a restricted area in the dark without flashlights.
So.. the base was/is a huge chunk of prime beachside property in east hampton, i don't think i could estimate the worth of the land, but it would be ENORMOUS. anyway, the area was basically clear of structures, we noticed a couple watch towers and a small building, but nothing of any real interest. BUT then after climbing over a large hill we saw something strange, a huge cinderblocked off doorway into the side of the hill. The entrance way was gigantic, you could have easily driven a tractor trailer through. Fortunately for our exploration someone had taken the time to sledgehammer a hole in the cinderblocks large enough for a person to slip through. What we found inside was a bit strange, there was a large room off the main entrance with another blocked doorway, again with a hole smashed through it. and behind this was a tunnel that went for at least the length of a football field. we walked down the tunnel exploring with the only light sources available, a few candles which would blow out constantly.
There were a number of rooms off the main tunnel, some of them were filled with row after row of bunk beds, some with row after row of small cages. the twelve of us who gathered up the nerve to go were getting increasingly horrified as we heard from one of my classmates about the history of the facility as a pioneer in mind control experimentation performed on humans, animals and "other forms of consciousness that were deemed to exist". This was only where it began, the faculty started to observe, train and transform the psychic abilities of its test subjects. Apparently it eventually got to the point where a psychic's thoughts could be amplified with hardware, and illusions could be manifested both subjectively and objectively. This included the virtual creation of matter. That discovery led to theoretical time bending, which is where the philidelphia experiment comes in (and Nicola Tesla, see, this digression is actually relevent)
The experiments i was just talking about were supposed to have taken place in the 70's thirty years after the bizarre experiments on the USS Eldridge. The basic goal of the philidelphia experiment was to develop radar invisibility on a battleship to aid the allies in WWII. Nicola Tesla (one of, if not the most brilliant man of the last hundred years) was the visionary behind the project, through his design the scientists were able to make the USS Eldridge invisible to the naked eye, by removing it from both time and space. Now reports are varied as to the results of this process, the most common report is that the entire crew that were aboard the Eldridge during its dimensional jump were mentally horrified by what they had seen. Reports claim that during the reanimation (maybe not the right word) bodies of the sailors were planted in the bulkhead of the ship. The survivors were all discharged as "mentally unfit" or just generally discredited, and the entire affair was supressed. The other report claims that Tesla succeeded in sending an unmanned battleship into a different dimension and then back again, but when pressed by the government to repeat the eperiment with a crew of sailors, withdrew himself from the project and sabotaged the mechanisms involved so that no one else could continue the work.
Now this is connected to Montauk how? oh right, the good folks at montauk during their work with time bending and psychic matter displacement apparantly opened up a worm hole to the 40's where they used their new found abilities to aid in the Philidelphia Experiment.
It was about this point in our exploring that we all shook the last bits of fecal matter out of our pant legs and turned to see a flash light scanning through the room that we entered through. we quickly snuffed out our candles and ducked into one of the rooms full of cages. we hid there for what felt like hours but was probably only 10 minutes, trying not to hear the ghosts of all the people who were forced to undergo extensive mind control torture. finally we agreed that it was time to get the fuck out of there, unfortunately the only way out was the way in, which was also apparently not as empty as it had been.
When we got to the hole in the doorway we all waited, none of us wanting to be the first to climb through the little hole to be clubbed by some mad scientist waiting for a fresh test subject. Finally your fearless hero (thats me by the way) puffed out his chest and climbed through to the next room.
of course, there wasn't anyone there by that time and we managed to sneak all the way off the military base without being captured/interrogated/kissed by pretty girls/trapped in little cages.
well thats pretty much what i was thinking about, aren't you glad you have this portal into my head. I guess i'm gonna read some more. Don't you love rainy thursdays?
