I have a burning desire to go hiking right now but lack the equipment needed to do so in the winter. During the summer I roughed it. I slept with a tarp and a blanket and rested my head on a tree root. If it rained I had the tarp. If it got a bit chilly I had the blanket. But in the winter that would be lethal and stupid. I have acess to a tent to keep me dry but not a sub-freezing rated sleeping bag. During the summer sneakers sufficed but now I couldn't get by without gore-tex. I need a good coat too. The buddy I primarily go hiking with is leaving for the airforce in march. I can't imagine someone of his size and disposition joining the military but he wants to get the hell out here. And get a job that doens't involve a check-out line.
Time is running out.
Most hikers love to out geek each other by showing off how good a meal they can make with only dehydrated foodstuffs. I like to out geek those guys by making things like chili from scratch or pasta. Right now I'm thinking about fried chicken or say a seafood risotto. As long as everythings frozen and insulated and with say a pound or two of dry ice, it'll keep. Imagine that: gourmet food at the end of a 7 mile hike.

And a tarp and a blanket really is roughing it...
