Mungus in the Studio, Mixing Day 2 (Thursday September 25, 2008)
On the 15th mixing officially began. We (Adam, Stephen, and I) came in on the 18th and listened to what Duane had done been up to. We left with the first mixes of "Sex Kills" and Mystery Song X (which is available for your listening pleasure over on our MySpace page as well as our Facebook page). I typed up a little something, but didn't manage to actually post it. These are the notes from day two.
We started with "Recompense" (formerly "Ponderous Groove") at 10:30. Talked about "Sex Kills" needing more actual bass in the mix and less kick drum in the final mix.
Lots of layers musically in this song, with a lot for him to keep track of.
Duane asked about my girlfriend, and I told him she wasn't my girlfriend anymore. He whipped around and gave me one of the best "Oh my god!" faces ever. I said, "She's my fiance! Bam!" We talked about that a bit before moving on to "Remora" at 11:50. This sounds the best to me so far of the bunch. Distortion rules the day. I wish my bass sounded like this all the time.
12:10 and "Longshot" roars forth. We all start at the same time! If only we could always start that cleanly!
12:20 "Jade". Beautiful, best song on the album (imho), cross-over hit Jade. Fuck, I love this song.
Lunch at Ramsey's (chicken & dumplings, kale greens, creamed corn) then back to the studio by 1:45.
"Remora" gets rendered then we move back to "Recompense" for a listen-through.
2:30 and we have been working on "Move", and by "we" I mean Duane. It's taking a little work to get everything perfectly in time.
Adam and Stephen arrived a few minutes before 3. We mixed "Move" a bit more, then moved on to listening to "Jade". Mixing the vocals for "Jade" was the hardest of any song, apparently. We increased the acoustic guitar in the outtro.
3:26 and we're back at "Longshot".
3:40 and Duane and Stephen have been having a lengthy discussion about the theory of delay and why Stephen wants it at the beginning at Duane feels it's overdone. We went with Stephen's desire.
4:18 brings us to "Recompense" again, specifically the quiet part. We're tweaking vocal effects and the clean guitar line.
4:28 notes on "Sex Kills". Bass turned up, kick drum and guitar down a little. Some breathing sounds removed in the first verse.
5:06 Mystery Song X (which isn't such a mystery anymore... go hear it at our MySpace page or our Facebook page). We're playing with the intro distortion. We took the vocals down a bit, and the guitar solo as well (like we did with the previous song). We're moving toward balance.
Duane will continue mixing on his own, we'll keep listening and sending him notes. We'll be back in the studio next Thursday and will be finished quite soon!
