Mungus in the Studio, Day 7 (Thursday, August 21, 2008)

It's a bad day for cats: we passed the bodies of two as we were leaving Mt. Washington today. They both looked (at least from behind) like they were lounging on the road. Bad beginning to the day.

Once we arrived at the studio we began by listening to "Sex Kills" and selecting pieces of metal to whack in order to add an industrial layer to the thing. Michael beat the crap out of a piece of sheet metal in time to the song (it took about four minutes to record it). We've moved on to recording overdubs and the guitar solo for the tune. It all feels like it's going to be really big.

---

1:37 and we're back from lunch. We're listening to "Sex Kills" which is pretty much finished, save for final mixing. We're talking about adding a couple of things, but it is, for all intents and purposes, done.

---

2:10 and we're doing the vocals for "Longshot". I've been opening lines of communication with various entities to get this album published. I don't mean to be mysterious, but that's the most specific I can be at this point. We've moved on, at 2:50, to the clean guitar parts of the song. I, having done my part last week, am bored bored bored. I've been creating images left and right. To see a couple, check out my personal music page Jack in Irons. The skeleton with the boar skull is a result of yesterday's boredom. Today I'm looking for different skulls and different human bodies.

Stephen just drank his fourth Red Bull today. It's 3:12.

---

It's almost 4. "Swing" got a cool descant line and now Adam is tracking the lyrics for "Get Some". I'm still working on images and on making my album title idea more palatable to Stephen. He's hesitant, so he requested some sort of modifier to give it more weight.

4:31 and our more melodic, less heavy tune ("Flame On") has gotten a subtle vocal addition.

Now we're working on tracking vocals for Mystery Song X.

---

5:25 and we're re-recording the new vocals at the beginning of "Move" because Michael coughed up a lung during the first take. "I didn't know we were recording!" was his position.

At some point we started talking about Vincent Gallo's website (see below), and Adam did a take where he sang about the price of the man's... well, just click on the link below, read the page, and use your imagination. He also sang the line, "With a big prosthetic" (again, read the page linked below) and Duane looped it at the end of the song. Adam liked that enough that he's thinking about singing that vocal (with different words) over the ending. (I have a mix of the song, kinda like a daily, featuring the Gallo inspired lyrics. Adam composed more inspired by the webpage, and we've been joking about doing the Vincent Gallo remix of "Move".)

---

No Theremin adventures today. Maybe tomorrow. We also haven't touched "Remora" at all, and we all have some overdubs to do in a number of the songs. We still have a lot of work to do. I just hope we have time to get to "Mr. Sathington Bets the Ponies".

---

Videos we watched today include Maynard from Tool taking down a fan at a show in the 90s, and then Keith Richards showing how it's done.

Absurd news about which we've been laughing (as I mentioned above) is this lovely page on director/actor/Vincent-Gallo-fan Vincent Gallo's merch site. A quote to prepare you: "I, Vincent Gallo, star of such classics as Buffalo 66 and The Brown Bunny have decided to make myself available to all women. All women who can afford me, that is. For the modest fee of $50,000 plus expenses, I can fulfill the wish, dream, or fantasy of any naturally born female. The fee covers one evening with Vincent Gallo. For those who wish to enjoy my company for a weekend, the fee is increased to a mere $100,000. Heavy set, older, red heads and even black chicks can have me if they can pay the bill. No real female will be refused." Classy classy. And yes, the reading gets better, especially when he starts talking about lesbians.

More tomorrow!

~Benjamin
