Mungus in the Studio, Day 6 (Wednesday, August 20, 2008)
It's 10:30 and we're setting up Stephen's guitar rig for overdubs. It's nice to be back in the studio after those two days off. It was really weird, actually, to not be getting up and driving to Lexington. The pattern of 10AM-7PM was daunting (and exhausting), but not having it for a couple of days was a little disorienting.
The plan for today, apparently, is to record vocals, guitar overdubs, and toward the end of the day do the "Remora" rhythm tracks (i.e., me) and then brainstorm and storyboard what the tunes need as far as extras. ("Sex Kills" is going to get an industrial rhythm track that we create organically by hitting large metal things in the studio, for example.)
I just told Duane we want to call our fans (when we form a fan club) "Mungaloids" and he pretty much lost it. We had kicked around "Mungolian Hoard" for a while, but "Mungaloids" seemed to walk that line between exceptionally offensive and funny/not as offensive. Then again, it might just be completely offensive.
---
Now that I've alienated the majority of my readers, it's 12:48. We're recording some guitar overdubs for "Flame On". The plan is to get some vocals down (or at least set up) before breaking for lunch. I've just learned that one of our readers has a healthy crush on our guitarist. If you're interested, ladies, he's single. Just hit him up on his MySpace page! Awwwww yeah.
It's now 1:21 and we're breaking for lunch. Adam has been recording vocals for "Flame On" for about fifteen minutes. More vocal fun and doubling when we return!
---
2:20 and we've started recording harmonies for the vocals on "Flame On". Adam says he finds it really weird singing harmony with himself. We ate at Tolly Ho's and expect to be regretting it the rest of the day. And night, maybe.
Now at 3:48 Adam's been tracking "Jade". He very nearly got it in one take. They're going back over it just to have various options to work with in the mixing process. There aren't going to be overdubs and harmonies on this one (or if there are, there won't be many).
---
4PM and the Groove that is Ponderous is having its vocal tracks recorded. Everything still sounds really amazing, which is good. I was listening to our EP and comparing that finished product to the unmixed and unedited tracks from this recording session, and even in their raw form the current stuff is lightyears beyond that first cd. I think people (and DJs) are going to be really impressed by this offering.
4:58 and "Swing" is having vocals recorded. "Ponderous Groove"'s vocal overdubs are really kinda great. "Swing" is officially my new favorite song of ours to play. It had been "Flame On" but without the section that has me hitting my bass for the open note sustain, it dropped a little. Add to things the fact that we funked up the bassline of "Swing" while de-funking the guitar and turning up the rawk... I can't wait to play this beast out.
---
5:15 finds us returning once again to guitars. We're recording the acoustic sections of "Ponderous Groove".
6:06 and "Move"'s intro is recorded, as well the center section. One amp is clean and the other has a Univibe effect on it. The two are blending really well into one lush track. "Move" is one of the songs we wanted to record for the EP but weren't able to due to time constraints. Looking back, it's better we didn't record it the first time around. This way you get to hear it in all its glory the first time.
We're not getting to Remora today. Duane's doing some rough mixes for us, some two track stuff for our listening pleasure.

Shit. Adam found a Theremin. Tomorrow should be... "fun".
