Mungus in the Studio, Day 2 (Thursday August 14, 2008)
Being awake was a little harder today for all of us. Stephen and Michael slept in the car on the way down (Stephen with a shirt over his head--image to be posted).
---
It's now 1:30. We spent the morning recording "Ponderous Groove", tracking the drums (which is good because I was slowly unlearning how to play the bass the longer we went). We then moved on to "Longshot" which we recorded pretty much immediately without any changes. "Ponderous Groove" (to be renamed at a later date) has some major alterations toward the end, with parts being lopped out or extended. Not so much "Longshot". We all agreed there wasn't any fat to be trimmed, just some honing to be done.
---
2:40 and back from lunch. We've started listening to "Remora" in order to begin the storyboarding process. "Oh crap"s from both Adam and Michael. This may be the first difficult song we have to work on. Aaaaaaaaand we've decided to put it off until we can start on it earlier in the day. We're going to record "Flame On".
---
4:50 and the section where I hit the bass to sustain the open D is gone. Oh, the section's still there, but I'm not playing anything over it for the first half. Aurally it really works to just have the guitar and drums, but it was fun (and I think a fun visual) to beat that bass. Ah well. All serves The Song.
We're all really dragging today. The energy of yesterday has dissipated and we're left with having been up since the wee hours yesterday until fairly late last night, and doing it all again today. This is only day two. I imagine we'll hit a rhythm.
---
We recorded "Swing" at the end of the day. We didn't have many changes to make (though, happily, we removed the awkward "bass solo" section) and just tore through it. We finally relaxed and started performing. It went really well.
