Screen on the green is a cool thing Atlanta does every summer. They put up a huge screen in our big city park every Thursday for 2 months, and show old classic Movies for free. When the weather is good THOUSANDS of people show up with blankets and chairs, picnics and beer/wine to watch. Last night it was the old classic THE BIRDS.
IT was really nice out. Id never seen the birds. IT was a decent flick, though I found the ending to be a bit useless. IT juststopped. There was no conclusion.
I had parked in a furniture stores parking lot and was surprised no one had taken that last spot I parked in. SCORE!!! When we got back I had a boot on my truck though. SCORED ON! For those of you that dont know, booting is the towing alternative. They put this large metal boot on your wheel so you cant drive away. I fully acknowledge that I saw the small sign that warned of it being private property, so I did not cop an attitude with the guy. It does no good reallyyouve been booted and it private property. YOU LOSE..even if its crap.
The argument is the simple question WHY? The store is closed and has been for hours, and theres a huge event going on that requires people more parking then there is. They arent even charging for parkingjust lurking in the shadows waiting for you to walk away. Then POWGOTCHA!!! Its rude, its mean, its sneakyand its GREED in its finest hour. Free enterprise is the heartbeat of this country.
Of course my inner child wants to jump up and down, scream yell, break windows, etc. Then the simple plan came to mind. I am going to Xerox a copy of the receipt I made him produce, and his business card, and write a little warning including that I was towed form that location. Then Im going to go down to that same parking lot and warn people as they try to park. The note will legitimize my intentions, and offer the contact information to the ass hats that are screwing everyone.
I will go away of course, if they give me my 50 bucks back. ORI will see to it that they make ZERO dollars by running off all the future victims! They booted about 15 people (maybe 20) that night. 15 x $50 you do the math. They can lose the 700 to 1000 bucks or pay me to go away. Free Enterprise baby!!!
I need to close with the fact that I didnt have the 50 bucks. Ive had a very expensive week and today (the day after) is payday. Im fortunate that I have friends that got my back.
Then..is a moment that saves the last shred of decency and respect for humanity that I have, I was gifted by a total stranger this morning. I was buying 2 ckn biskets at Mc Ds this morning. They are a buck a pieceand when Im broke they become the breakfast of champions. Only, what I thought was my last $5 was really my last $1. I dont even have the money for one of them when you ad the tax into it. I am staring at the cashier and shes STRESSING, as is the guy behind me, and my heart and pride are sliding down the back of my leg here in my depressing final financial moment. This sweet woman from the line next to me just puts a dollar in my hand. I was surprised and sort of half acknowledged her as I gave the money to the cashier and hurriedly got out of the way.
When I had gathered myself after pondering how I had gotten in this mess, I realized I didnt know which of the people waiting on food had done this for me. I mean..EVERYONE THERE but me had a dollar to spare. She was the only one that opted for helping me instead of GLARING AT ME. Im not a bumjust a dude that messed up. I tapped the one woman that I thought might have been her and was right.
You know, this part almost makes me stupid emotional.
She was totally humble and truly surprised I took the second to say thanks. She acted like it was nothing at all, and all with a sincerity that is just kind of missing in the day to day life. My situation with the boot isnt the end of the world, and Im not treating it like it is.but I was certainly a little jaded when I woke up today. This random act of kindness from a total stranger kind of saved the day in my little world.
Random acts of kindness..pass them on.
