So I was in San Diego yesterday checkin out the Zoo. It is an impressive place no doubt. Despite all the good of it, it is also a very sad place. I was saddened by the large mammals in such small cages/displays, especially the bears, knowing that in the wild their home ranges extend hundreds of kilometers and now they are in such a confined space.
On a happy note I also went to the Birch Aquarium at the Scripps Institute of Oceanograpy, which was ok as far as aquariums go, but not super exciting. The most impressive thing was coming over the hill down to the aquarium when you get to see the Pacific Ocean in its wide splendour. I can honestly say I was moved by the sight, it had been over a year since I had seen the ocean and smelled the salt air. It was one of those moments of inspiration that I know that I NEED to get back to its embrace somehow soon...
