20 random facts. Nice. I was wondering when this one was going to catch up with me. Revenge will be mine Monastrell. Oh yes...maybe tomorrow, maybe next week...but it will be mine!
I am adding them onto the end of my current journal entry, cause I still want peoples opinion on that...so youll have to scroll down. Damn...if this thing gets any longer, Ill have to publish it in book form...

So. It has become apparent that I am at a crossroads. Surprisingly not one of whether to make a change in my life, but what direction that change should take. Having come frighteningly close to having the options of life taken from me, it has become painfully obvious to me that just working and making money (even decent money) is not going to do it for the next 20-40 years of my life.
Not that I have anything against doing something you enjoy, and making boat loads of cash. In fact, I am wholly in favor of it (God bless capitalism!) However, what I am doing is enjoyable...but not a passion. And, it also has the unfortunate difficulty of being relatively short sighted in the scope of humanity. I.E. It does little to progress the human race...as either individuals or a society...and I find this ultimately hollow.
So...it is time to move on, which brings on the quandary. I have two passions...science and film. And, to be even more frustrating, I am relatively talented at both (although some critics of my photography would disagree :-)
Initially, I assumed these to be morally counter-definitive. The betterment of humanity (science) in contrast to the betterment of personal fulfillment (film)...however it has dawned on me that this is not the case. In fact, they share a common facet which draws me to both...
They both alter the lives of individuals and society for the better in very profound ways. Lets examine the passions of both, independently.

Science, specifically Microbiology.
This is a new subject for me and is quickly forming as a passion. Why?
First, I seem to have a talent for it. I not only understand the texts I read, and find it fascinating...but find myself continually forming postulates after reading one chapter...only to find those same postulates answered in the next. To me, at least, this leads me to believe I am not only comprehending the material, but understanding it well enough to expound to the logical conclusions.
Second...this is the answer to life. This IS THE ANSWER! All of human suffering that is not caused by the actions of man (I.E. hunger, war, crime) and, potentially some that ARE (crime, hunger) will be solved by the microbiologists of the next century. Disease can be stopped...ALL OF IT, with the research being done in MB.
Doctors (God bless the ones who are not arrogant assholes) are the mechanics of the body...sew it shut, sanitize it, medicate it, or cut it off...but the MBs will cure the root. We already know the cause of Alzheimers...we just have to figure out how to denature and dispose of the proteins we dont want, without damaging the similar ones we do! And ALL deteriorative diseases are roughly the same!
Third, the only magazines, books, articles I was ever interested in were ones about science (I was the only kindergartener in my class who could name obscure astronomical bodies, label the entire anatomy of a cat, or draw the components of a jet engine)...or those about film, which brings us to the second subject.
*********
Film (or more specifically motion pictures.)
Film, believe it or not, qualifies as the advancement of the human species...both as individuals and as a culture.
Film shapes lives, changes thoughts, creates awareness, stops prejudice, expands horizons, inspires potential...even helps young brains form physiologically (when done properly.)
We can ALL think of films (and books for that matter) that have shaped part of our personalities. That film, seen as a child, that we can recall to this day as a source of inspiration...or even an influence on our personal theologies, moralities and life directions.
Film has taught racists about unity, homophobes about tolerance, the despondent about hope, the lost about community, the condemning about patience, the hateful about love. It has, with much controversy, brought subjects cloaked in darkness to light; educated the masses to the basics of life (most of us are not even aware that, as late as the 1940s, many urban women had NO IDEA where babies came from until they were married and had one...and up till the 1920s it was actually ILLEGAL, in many states, to TELL ONE where they came from!!)
So...which path? That is the question. I think this has become such a quandary, in part, because....unlike other career choices I have made (I have had a few) I have a sneaking suspicion that this may be the last career. Not for any reasons of early doom and gloom...but simply because both of these careers require a time commitment that will overshadow the other.
I doubt I will be able to cure cancer in the next ten years...leaving enough time to start at the ground floor in Hollywood :-) And, conversely, if I ever want to make a film for a greater audience than shorts on AtomFilms ...I would likely need to get started now.
I have, already, made one decision. I will start to take classes in both (starting in a few months, unfortunately) and see which one sparks my soul the most. However, that aside, I would really love to hear your thoughts...on any part of the above.
Thanks for tolerating an indecisive twit :-)
