I never thought that I would see the day when Christian establishments completely throw out everything that they claim to be. The University of The Cumberlands, Cumberland College, located in Williamsburg, KY, seems to be a prime example of hypocrisy in Christianly Love. The Campus is filled with many assortments of students. There are Christians, Buddhists, Atheists, other religions, Blacks, Whites, Asians and many other ethnic persuasions. There are an abundance of athletes, musically inclined people, theater majors and other countless clubs, and activities. There are also skinny people, fat people, average people, beautiful and ugly people. And there are heterosexuals and homosexuals. The only one to be discriminated against at UC is the latter, the homosexuals.
In the Student Handbook, on page 2, Dr. Jim Taylor clearly states in a letter written to the students that You have God-given potential. You are unique. You are one of a kind. There is no one quite like you. You are a special creation of God. So we are concerned about you, and we care for you. On April 6, 2006, a young homosexual male was suspended for school for posting on his personal blog about a deep, loving and committed relationship that he was in. Allegedly, a student was concerned and printed off the young mans blog and turned it into the Dean of Student Life, for her to look over. It was immediately determined that the student should be expelled from school for his homosexuality. In all fairness to the school they did have a clause written in the Student Handbook that says, Any student who engages in or promotes sexual behavior not consistent with Christian principals (including sex outside of marriage and homosexuality) may be suspended or asked to withdraw from the University of the Cumberlands. I think the key word there is may. There was no knowledge prior to that day that the school had known about this boys sexual preference. There was no alternative given to him other than he was suspended from school, and asked to leave the campus by the end of that day.
It makes me sick to think that Christian faculty members, who attend church on a regular basis, seem to be so unforgiving towards this boys life style. Instead of embracing this student with Gods love, they repelled him and turned him away. Jesus would never have done that. Didnt Jesus love everyone? Or is that just a parable they told us in Sunday School? To be a Christian means, to my understanding, that instead of turning non-believers away from Christ, that you embrace them and show them through your actions what Gods love is. If the University truly lived up to its Christian principals, shouldnt they have tried to help the young homosexual with his sin instead of showing him the exact opposite of what Gods love is? Didnt President Taylor say that we are all unique and a special creation of God? Did he not say that the college is concerned about us and cares for us? I didnt see one word of that to be true through Cumberlands careless actions. The Bible says, 1 John 3:18 NRSV: Let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. In Cumberlands haste to rid its campus of one sin, they clearly defied one thing the Bible says. They told the students they love them, care about them, but in a students time of need, they reject them, and virtually, put them on the street. The University did not care if this young man had a place to go or not. They just wanted the gayness to not be on their precious campus. They are very quick to exile the homosexuals, and uphold their morality clause that bans that particular lifestyle, while they fail to punish those who drink, do drugs or have pre-marital sex. They care little about those things and even give numerous chances for athletes to change their ways. If the University is going to uphold that one rule, then they should be as devout about following the rest of them as well. The Bible says, "Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again. And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye, and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." Matthew: 7:1-5.
This is not about homosexuality on a Christian campus, nor about letting the afore-mentioned young man back into school. This is about living what you preach, saying one thing, and actually doing it. This is not about destroying the Colleges name, but making sure that they live up to the Christian principals that they so willingly say they practice. Let us all remind them that loving thy neighbor is also on the Ten Commandments, not rejecting those who are different than us. Christians are taught to embrace others, especially those who are not right with God. What happened to loving everyone and accepting them with open arms? What happened to sharing Gods Word? Was it all just a statement and no actions behind it? Do you really think that is what Jesus would have done? Search your own heart, I doubt it will tell you to hate. If there is one thing the Bible clearly says is is that God has poured out his love into our hearts. - Romans 5:5 Where did Gods love go on this Christian Campus?
