What made my weekend, even though I had to work 20 hours total on Saturday and Sunday?
1. Iowa State beat Nebraska
2. Pittsburgh beat Philadelphia.
I haven't played football in 9 years, and I don't watch it much anymore. I miss the violence and the carnage. Cutting defensive linemen, pancaking linebackers and popping defensive backs are images I still replay in my head. I don't miss the screaming coaches, or selfish players who take all the credit for themselves. But I played for some good coaches who taught with patience instead of screaming, gave encouragement instead of belittlement. I played with some unselfish players who put team first and acknowledged the other players as the roots of their success. "Nice hole, dogs" or "Thanks guys, I had all the time in the world" were phrases that I loved to hear. For these guys, I would've played anybody, anytime and anywhere.
Last but not least, I miss going into the lockerroom on friday evenings or saturday mornings and getting dressed. After I got dressed with all my pads and gear, I would put my helmet on. After buckling my chinstrap, I was overcome with greatest feeling in the world and would walk onto the field. I am invincible.
