So I watched the documentary of Ed Hardy last night (while drinking Sailor Jerry), I have to say though, I wasn't impressed with the presentation. Ed - who's initials are deth - knew what he wanted to do with his life from an early age, something I can respect deeply. For me, I'm almost 30 and I just figured out what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.
He worked his ass off and even studied as an apprentice to a Japanese tattoo artist. But the overall tone of the doc was very "Readers Digest" as far as the telling of it. The whole thing was less than an hour, spending at least half of it on his early live (up to collage years) and the rest on how his career developed; which wasn't just straight forward.
There was also a definite hippy tone to it as well - he refered to the 50's as repressive and took passive aggressive shots at anything conservative. I don't necessarily mind hippies, but I don't listed to the "the corporation's man... it's a conspiracy" line; you have to have some substance for me to listen. Maybe that's the whole tone for me, they covered his live but it didn't seem like there was much substance for one of the most famous tattoo artists.
As always, I would recommend that you check it out and form your own opinion.
