So, we had our first points race today, the 'Buck Carlisle Memorial'. It's a coastal race, and one of the club's most important of the year (big silver perpetual cup and all). It was our 3rd race, and the second that we finished. The wind was 5-10 and mostly SSE, seas were 2-4. We're still racing JAM, as I'm still learning the boat, and we've just now got the spinnaker rigging sorted out, but I digress.
Anyhoo, we finished in the money! We took a third, and were bested by a J27 and an S2 30 with a 312 rating (club politics? noooooooo!). We came in in front of a Ben 38 and 5 other boats, including the club commodore's. Not a bad debut, if I say so myself. Jake and his dad were my crew, and were fabulous, and all of Jake's rigging upgrades were on the mark. There were a couple of things we didn't get right in time, including weight distribution on a very long, very broad reach, but hell, wheeeeeeeeeee! Can't wait until we get the new main on, should be before the first race of the fall series. The after race party was a hoot, with the old guard looking at the thirtysomething tattoed people with the smokin' tiny boat and a trophy... Pretty cool little trophy, too. Looks like driftwood with dolphins leaping above, which is pretty kewl, as we had a pod off the bow on the downhill run!
